HELPING DRY EYES

Dry Eyes, or dry eyes syndrome, has reached epidemic proportions globally. It is estimated that up to 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 experiences dry eye syndrome and it is also more common in women than men.

Without proper assessment, treatment can be hit and miss.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DRY EYE SYNDROME?

You may experience one of more of the following symptoms:

- Your eyes are red
- Your eyes feel gritty, itchy or sore and this feeling gets worse during the day
- Your eyelids stick together when you wake up in the morning
- Your vision may be temporarily blurred (this may improve with a blink)
- You may experience extreme sensitivity to light (photophobia)

If you wear contact lens you may find that your lenses become increasingly less comfortable to wear.

WHAT CAUSES DRY EYES?

Dry eye syndrome is caused when your eyes stop making tears as they usually would. This may be because the tears evaporate too quickly, there maybe an issue with drainage, or it might be because not enough tears are produced.

Tears are a complex combination of water, oils and lipids and they help to lubricate the eye, to wash away any debris and to protect against infection.

When your eyes stop making tears as they usually would, your eyes can feel dry, irritated and inflamed.

WHEN SHOULD YOU HAVE YOUR CHILD’S EYES EXAMINED?

Children’s eyes are precious, and clear vision is essential for your child’s educational, physical and social development.

With 1 in 5 Australian children requiring on-going assessment or suffering from a vision problem that has gone undetected, it is important that early diagnosis of any eye problems is critical.

At 2020 Vision our optometrists are experienced in providing children’s eye care services, offering eye examinations for children of all ages.

WHEN SHOULD YOU HAVE YOUR CHILD’S EYES EXAMINED?

Optometry Australia recommends that children have a full eye examination with an optometrist before starting school and then regular visits as they progress through primary and secondary school.

For most children, we recommend examinations every 2-3 years.

SCREEN TIME & YOUR CHILD’S EYES

The most common eye problem amongst children is myopia, or short-sightedness.

Children increasingly engage in near vision activities and a recent study showed the prevalence of myopia doubled in Australia between 2005 and 2011 amongst 12 year olds.

A child suffering from myopia will find many school activities difficult, such as reading the whiteboard in class, and they may also experience headaches, and rub their eyes frequently.

It is imperative that the issue is detected early.
