🙎🏽‍♀️Susan weights 70kg and told me yesterday very proudly: I ran 15km and I already lost 2 kilos!

🙍🏼‍♂️However, John said: wait what? I have been on a plan to lose weight for the last month and I just drop 3% on body fat.

Who is in a better position? Is it Susan or John?🙎🏽‍♀️🙍🏼‍♂️

📐Body composition analysis can be done with different techniques and methods, they all have pros and cons. However, the most important thing is to learn when to apply them and why. Which one is the outcome we want to measure?

💧If Susan had used bioimpedance before and after her run, she wouldn’t have been that excited. She is just dehydrated and lost 2 litres of sweat during her run, not body fat. Give her some water and she will regain that weight in no time.

🧈John, on the other hand, has been systematically reaching a caloric deficit to lose 3% of body fat, and probably will be able to check this with several methods: bioimpedance, skinfolds, DXA and so on. So, it is not a quick fix, he did lose 3 kg.

🧐Have you been in this position before? Do you know when to use the handsaw or the hammer? Is your body composition analysis a roller coaster all the time? (I bet you are probably just checking your body weight…)

🪚⚒“Use the right tool for the right job! If you want to cut wood, you use a handsaw. You can’t use a hammer for everything”. Those are the wise words of (ISAK level 4) and are perfectly applied to body composition analysis and sports nutrition.

💧Would you use skinfolds to assess hydration status? What about DXA scans for routine checks on the field? All the methods have pros and cons and at .anthropometry.lab you will learn how to choose the best method for the outcome you want to measure.

🔈Stay tuned for more about body composition analysis.

🤩Everyone wants to be successful until they see what it takes. But to become an anthropometrist can be a journey full of excitement and new experiences. At least it was like that for me!

💚Everything started in 2009 after I learned what ISAK was during my undergrad degree. I travelled to the other side of the country to get certified and I instantly got in love.

👩🏻‍🔬After that, I did a lot of volunteer work to study the relation between malnourishment in children under 15 years and the prevalence of Chagas Disease (What a trip!) Followed by community service and training in Las Lapas, a community close to the beach but abandoned by the government, receiving help from the private sector to be able to learn and build a better future for their residents and their children.

⚽️When I graduated from Uni I became ISAK level 2 anthropometrist and started to work with professional soccer thanks to my mentor and friend (ISAK level 2) and also to (ISAK level 3) until I moved to Australia.

🇳🇿I continued my professional career as an anthropometrist in Melbourne. I had measured hundreds of athletes from different sports: soccer, karate, runners, triathletes, until I became ISAK level 3 Instructor with the best and ,

📐In 2020, .anthropometry.lab was created, to accompany new graduate Australians in planning their career pathway within the health sector, giving support, guidance, training and the equipment they need to become anthropometrists.

We are all in different stages in our professional career as anthropometrists and that’s why we don’t need the same equipment.

At .anthropometry.lab we not only have different options, we also help you choose the one that is more suitable for your current needs.

How cool is that? Let us guide you through the process, you only need to pick the colour 😜

To buy a proper stadiometer can be a titanic task, as there are so many products in the market, many of them good enough to be considered as part of our equipment.

To buy the most adequate stadiometer, we need to (again) think about the purpose. Will it be used for consultations in an office? Will it be for research or field measurements? Do you need something more permanent to stay on the wall or something more portable?

At .anthropometry.lab we supply portable stadiometers (1) with detachable mechanism, ergonomic grip and a maximum range of 220cm. This stadiometer is available in anodised Aluminium and it’s designed with a 35x35cm floor surface non-slip base. All these characteristics make the stadiometer a great option for in situ consultations or field settings, for both standing and seated height

also has two stadiometers, a portable one (2) and a semi-permanent option (3). The portable is great for consecutive measurements in situ or the field, but it is more expensive and bulkier than option (1). Option (3) is great for private practice (I have this one at my office, and we also have them at .anthropometry.lab). It is an affordable option but needs to be installed with precision and can’t be moved around as easily.

Number (4) is the way I learned at Uni. Is not the most accurate but it is sometimes the only option. You only need a squad and a measurement tape (sometimes is hard to keep it straight though!). Not suitable for research, but good enough if nothing else is available.

Which is your favourite stadiometer? Leave me your comments below:

Today, we want to talk about the different body mass scales available in the market for your consideration. We are not sponsoring any particular brand, so we will just mention some general characteristics you may need to consider.

The first aspect to consider is the purpose and the type of population you will work with. If you work with obese clients, the Seca scale (1) is a great option as it has a 200kg loading capacity, with graduation of 100g; it is digital and cost around $200 AUD.

A scale similar to number (2) will provide a good amount of information, for example, body composition by bioimpedance. It is digital, they can measure up to 200kg (you need to check specific models), with graduation between 50-100g; and probably cost around half of the price of a Seca scale. You need, however, some general understanding to be able to interpret the results.

Number (3) is a no-no, why? They are analogue and their graduation is usually 500g. They work with springs that tend to loosen over time, making them less and less accurate. But they are a budget friendly option.

Which scale do you use normally? Is it one you prefer the most? Please leave me your answers in the comments section.
