🏺Spikenard ( Nardostachys jatamansi)
The Fragrance of Devotion
🍂•🍂•🍂•🍂•🍂•🍂•🍂•🍂•🍂•🍂
In ancient times, spikenard was one of the most precious aromatic oils.
🏺
It was costly, rare, and often reserved for moments of deep significance — sacred anointing oils, luxury perfumes and medicine in Egypt, Rome and Near East.
It was worth its weight in gold as it was imported from remote Himalayan regions.
🏺
Spikenard is revered for its therapeutic qualities to treat insomnia, anxiety and indigestion. Highly valued in Ayurveda for its calming properties, wound healing and promote overall wellbeing.
🏺
In the Gospel, we see Spikenard reflected in a powerful act of love:
“Then Mary took a pound of costly ointment of spikenard… and anointed the feet of Jesus.” — John 12:3
This was not a casual gesture.
It was an offering…. Surrender
A pouring out of something valuable, without holding back.
🏺
In a world that often calls us to rush and to hold tightly to what we have,
Spikenard invites us to let go and surrender -just like the trees let go of their leaves in Autumn.
✨ devotion over distraction
✨ presence over productivity
✨ surrender over control
As we prepare our hearts for Easter,
we are gently invited to ask:
What am I being called to release?
What does it mean for me to live with greater devotion?
🌿
I’ll be sharing more about the sacred aromatics of Scripture, including spikenard, in an upcoming in-studio gathering.
A quiet space to pause, reflect, and prepare the heart.
