Tendon pain?

Here are 5 MYTHS we want to clarify, that a lot of people get misinformed about. So, to help you recover quicker, have a read on our tendinopathy post!

πŸ’™ Rest will make it better.
Actully rest rarely helps. We want to progressively load you, with recovery and strength tools as well

πŸ’™ Stretching helps
Stretching doesn't help either! Stretching actually compresses a tendon closer to the joint and can cause a rubbing inflammation response. In the short term it's not beneficial. You're better off using a foam roller or massage into the muscle than stretching the tendon

πŸ’™ Strengthening will injure me
Incorrect. Strengthening can be tricky to manage (load is key) but our tendons are very strong, they can tolerate a lot. So they need enough strength to make their change

πŸ’™ Tendinopathy = inflammation
This is old info. We used to call it tendon"itis" but studies have shown in chronic injuries there isn't any inflammation markers. So we have changed our language to tendinopathy for both acute and chronic pain. It's more about the body not healing effectively within its required timeline of injury.

πŸ’™ I can't do what I love anymore
Yes you can, we just adjust, modify and load and have patience. We wish things could get better in a quick timeline but we have to respect the body and the injury as well. We can work around it. Love to run, let's get you on an elliptical or run/walk intervals. Love to cycle, let's take out hills and do flats for a while. We can modify πŸ’ͺ

If you're injured our osteos can help manage your pain and get you back to what you love!

Back pain can be overwhelming. Before we show you our morning stretches, here are 2 things to understand

πŸ’™ Not all back pain is the same.

Back pain might be acute or chronic.

Acute back pain needs different care than chronic back pain, but each can be painful in their own ways. Your osteo will help you figure out what's making things worse, and what you can do to help yourself feel better.

πŸ’™ Not every injury you do is the same injury worsening.

You might have chronic back pain, and reinjure it once a year. Doesn't necessarily mean you've made your original injury worse. It can be irritated/inflamed in a similar area but not always a regression.Β

Your osteo will work with you to help you over your back pain journey to prevent the recurrence, and give you some exercises to help strengthen you going forward.

Movement and treatment are key for both conditions, just slightly different management!

If your back is bothering you, come see us!

Struggling with back pain? You're not alone.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people miss work or stop doing the things they love.

Did you know - most back pain isn't caused by a single injury, in most cases, it builds up over time. We call this the 1%'ers. Poor sleep, increased stress, colds/flus, different activities. All "little things" that can become bigger things.

The good news- you don't have to live with it!

Osteo treatment involves
πŸ’™ Decreasing tightness and guarding
πŸ’™ Gentle mobility
πŸ’™ Strengthening your muscles to help support your back
πŸ’™ Addressing postural complaints
πŸ’™ Osteopathy manual therapy including: soft tissue treatment, muscle and joint mobilisation, and nervous system changes to help you improve.

We spoke about tennis elbow pain last week, but did you know there's inside elbow pain that's called golfers elbow?!

Similarly to tennis elbow, golfers elbow gets irritated with twisting, gripping and lifting actions. Repetitive tasks, workplace ergonomics are also involved in this overuse injury.

Slightly different exercises and management for the area of pain, however both come down to postural positions and strength to help fix the problems.

If you have either tennis elbow or golfers elbow, reach out and we can help direct you to the best way to manage this, so you are treating the right injury the right way!

Elbow pain? Could be tennis elbow!

Tennis elbow can be a drag. It might not even be from a hit of tennis! It typically happens in office workers and repetitive actions like lifting a hammer, gripping a weight, or long hours at the desk.

Common causes:
πŸ’™ Tennis (who would have thought?!)
πŸ’™ Grip sports or weight lifting
πŸ’™ Prolonged computer use
πŸ’™ Manual labour - hammers, screwdrivers, lifting
πŸ’™ Carrying bags/luggage
πŸ’™ DIY or gardening - grip + twist movements

Early signs to see us for!
πŸ’™ Dull or sharp pain or tenderness on the outside of the elbow
πŸ’™ Pain worsening with gripping and lifting
πŸ’™ Pain stopping you from doing the things you love
πŸ’™ Difficulty opening jars

Don't ignore it.

Age is just a number....

You can be 70 and fit, you can be 20 and unfit.

As we age, it doesn't mean the aches and pains get worse. If anything, things can improve due to work/life/time changes as we shift through different stages. We treat many older adults that would rival the fitness of a younger person πŸ˜‰

We hear all the time that "I feel so old!" But it's truely in your power to add some incidental activity to your day and make some better choices, even if you are injured. Movement will always help an injury. There's really only a select few circumstances where doing nothing is helpful, and we would let you know if that's the case for you...

Stay moving, keep moving. Motion is lotion! Even if you start today, that's better than yesterday.

Overuse injuries:

There is a big running and mixed training boom currently. Racing is the new music festival! 🀣

Big races are selling out a year in advance, new super shoes, running clubs and Hyrox cults (which we love to see!) brings more people into exercise.

However;

With incorrect training, overuse can cause a few problems if not addressed:
πŸ’™ Too much load too soon
πŸ’™Muscle weakness and imbalances affecting other regions
πŸ’™Under fueling
πŸ’™Lack of recovery methods
πŸ’™Running too fast on your easy runs!

These things can be addressed with enough time to help you lace up for race day. Same principles apply to HYROX competitions - some of which are this weekend (good luck to those competing!)

Recovery is equally if not a more important part of your training to prevent overuse and overload injuries. Eating, sleeping, strengthening and programming are all essential to be peaking on race day!

Our Osteopaths can help you with your injuries from overuse.
