Age is just a number....

You can be 70 and fit, you can be 20 and unfit.

As we age, it doesn't mean the aches and pains get worse. If anything, things can improve due to work/life/time changes as we shift through different stages. We treat many older adults that would rival the fitness of a younger person πŸ˜‰

We hear all the time that "I feel so old!" But it's truely in your power to add some incidental activity to your day and make some better choices, even if you are injured. Movement will always help an injury. There's really only a select few circumstances where doing nothing is helpful, and we would let you know if that's the case for you...

Stay moving, keep moving. Motion is lotion! Even if you start today, that's better than yesterday.

Overuse injuries:

There is a big running and mixed training boom currently. Racing is the new music festival! 🀣

Big races are selling out a year in advance, new super shoes, running clubs and Hyrox cults (which we love to see!) brings more people into exercise.

However;

With incorrect training, overuse can cause a few problems if not addressed:
πŸ’™ Too much load too soon
πŸ’™Muscle weakness and imbalances affecting other regions
πŸ’™Under fueling
πŸ’™Lack of recovery methods
πŸ’™Running too fast on your easy runs!

These things can be addressed with enough time to help you lace up for race day. Same principles apply to HYROX competitions - some of which are this weekend (good luck to those competing!)

Recovery is equally if not a more important part of your training to prevent overuse and overload injuries. Eating, sleeping, strengthening and programming are all essential to be peaking on race day!

Our Osteopaths can help you with your injuries from overuse.

Did you know that the pain you feel in your shoulder blade or down your arm might be from your neck? This is a great visual to see the referral patterns of the neck and how you might feel something in one place but the origin may be from another area.

There's a lot more involved in neck and arm pain, so if you are experiencing discomfort, our osteos can help πŸ’™

Osteopaths prevent pain by focusing on the body's musculoskeletal system and its role in overall health and function.

Our four principles of osteopathy underline why and how we treat, with the focus on preventing your pain from recurring.

The four principles are:
πŸ’™ The body is a unit
πŸ’™ Structure and function are reciprocally related
πŸ’™ The body has self healing and self regulating mechanisms
πŸ’™ Treatment is based on the above 3 principles.

So, with this in mind, our blog covers how the above processes relate with our principles of osteopathy and how YOU can take charge and prevent pain with your osteo treatment.

Summer weather got you walking and running more?

Christmas parties wearing different footwear?

Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome - MTSS) or tibialis anterior tendinopathy can be very painful and frustrating!

It's primarily caused by an overload - too much, too soon, maybe on a different surface or different footwear like heels or sandals, or footy boots on hard surfaces.

We want to address this by getting strong in our calves and legs. Looking at our biomechanics and technique in running/walking sports and gradually loading back up until you can tolerate your training better.

Your home toolkit of a foam roller, massage ball and strength exercises will go far, but always good to see your osteo to get into your leg muscles and see how you're moving to address this properly and thoroughly!

Our calves are strong. They hold us up! We will help you get back into your walking and running in these summer months!

Do you know what ourll most prescribed exercise is?!

WALKING!

It's free, gets you active and outside, lowers your stress and helps your immune system. Basically it's the easiest thing to increase your general health and life expectancy.

Did you know walking has some awesome health benefits?
πŸ’™ Improves cardiovascular health
πŸ’™ Weight management
πŸ’™ Bone health
πŸ’™ Stress reduction
πŸ’™ Increased cognitive function

The Australian guidelines of physical activity recommend 150 minutes of moderate (heavier breathing) exercise per week.

10 000 steps a day has been the aim for a while, but 70 000 steps a week might be more achievable if you have longer time on weekends and the work week gets away from you.

It's sunny today, have you gone for your daily walk?! We have!

Running in the Melbourne Marathon?! πŸ₯³πŸ’ͺπŸƒ

It's taper time! Time to recover, stay moving and try not to get in your own head πŸ™ƒ the hard work is done!

Here are our top 4 taper time tips:
πŸ’™ Keep up the mobility - foam rollers, stretching, massage gun will be your best friend
πŸ’™ It's not the time to claw back any missed runs! The aim is to reduce mileage not add to it. So roll into the week with similar frequency and reduce the overall volume
πŸ’™ Carb loading - doesn't mean overeating! Make the day before pretty standard meals or you'll get an upset tummy at the start line. Pizza time the Thursday before a Sunday race 😜
πŸ’™ SMILE! It's a privilege to be able to race and be healthy enough for the start line.

Good luck racers!
