In preparation for Birth Trauma Awareness Week, next week the 15-21st of July, here is a quick infographic containing information relating to birth trauma in order to bring awareness to the complex psychological issues involved with birth trauma.
The theme for 2024 is Informed Consent, which has been inspired by the NSW parliamentary inquiry regarding informed consent and permission in prenatal and birthing care. Informed consent is essential for respectful maternity care and everyone is entitled to know their choices, risks and alternatives during childbirth - yet in healthcare this principle is often ignored causing trauma for birthing individuals and families.
If you or anyone you know has been affected by birth trauma don’t hesitate to make use of this posts listed resources.

As we approach R U OK day tomorrow, we want to shed light on this year's meaningful theme, "I'm here to hear". This reinforces that you do not need formal qualifications to talk with people about mental health, as meaningful conversations are important for everyone. When we truly listen, we're not just hearing words; we're understanding feelings, validating experiences, and nurturing connections.

At Peak Performance Psychology, we stand by the belief that mental health matters, and it begins with conversation. Whether you're seeking support, lending an empathetic ear, or simply spreading positivity, every effort counts. Having a conversation with someone who may be in need may play a greater role than you may think. Encouraging someone to take action to better their mental health may also be beneficial, which could include sharing online mental health resources, suggesting a visit to a GP or psychologist or even encouraging acts of self-care.

Here's how you can participate in this R U OK Day:
- Reach out to someone you care about and ask, "R U OK?"
- Listen without judgment.
- Share your own experiences and encourage vulnerability.

Remember, it's okay not to be okay, and it's even better to seek help and support when you need it.

Happy Friday! At some point during this weekend, try to take a moment to reflect on your current mental and physical state. Self care broadly refers to activities and practices that support physical, emotional and mental health. This does not have to be an expensive or time consuming activity as often the simplest things contribute greatly to ones current state. Establishing regular behaviours that contribute to your overall wellbeing and functioning can result in positive outcomes for your mental, emotional and physical health. Take these brief 8 tips for wellbeing as a reminder to do one nice thing for yourself this weekend.

Examples of self care practices can include:

- Taking a hot bath

Though Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month has passed, the importance of its message remains significant all year round.

Due to the stigma surrounding masculinity, it is not uncommon to find that a lot of men feel that they are unable to seek support when they need it most. Bottling up emotions and resisting help increases the risk of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression going unrecognized and untreated.

This is why online services such as MensLine, You Got This Mate, Beyond Blue and Lifeline have been created; to provide an accessible source of counselling, support and/or information surrounding mental health concerns for men.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, these services are available 24/7, all year round wherever you are in Australia.

April is Autism Awareness Month. This month aims to recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution that people with autism make to our world.
When asked what message they would most like to communicate to people, the autistic community wished to share that ‘no two people with autism are the same’. Autism is part of a spectrum and presents differently for everyone. Through educating ourselves and the community, we can overcome misconceptions about autism, practice what we learn to spread awareness among friends, family and colleagues, and most importantly demonstrate understanding and support to the autistic community and their families.
Raising awareness for autism and understanding of its many forms helps to create a society where autistic individuals and their families can thrive.

Mindfulness is a naturally possessed process by humans, however without regular practice it can be difficult for us to be consciously present and avoid reactive responses to problems or challenges. Practicing mindfulness allows us to bring awareness to our emotions, senses and physical beings, removing the sense of overwhelmingness by things going on around us. There are many ways to practice mindfulness, these can include through deep breathing techniques, meditation, walking or being actively aware of our body. Mindfulness is a practice that can occur at any time, even whilst you’re eating your favourite meal, when you take the time to truly enjoy the flavours, smells and textures of your food, you are actively and intentionally attentive to the moment. Try practice one bit of mindfulness today and every day and notice the small positive changes that may occur.
