Hi Melbourne Physio’s 👋
Anyone looking for some extra work or a change?
I’m looking for a physio to help cover my Mat Leave, commencing June 2023 ☺️🙏

About the role:
The clinic is in Caulfield & Malvern

Several options including; part time (3 full days per week or hours split across the week), 2 x sessions per week (roughly 10 hours) or 1 x session per week (roughly 4-5 hours)

The role is covering an existing patient load and seeing new referrals as they come in. There is definitely an option to extend beyond my Mat leave too 🙂

The case load is a nice mix of pre/post-natal, bladder, pelvic pain, pre/post radical prostatomy, s*xual dysfunction and MSK patients.

The role requires you to be able to independently manage a caseload - but I will be available to answer any questions & provide mentorship. CPD will also be provided.

If you are interested please send through your interest to info@18physio.com.au or call me on 0458789818

Thanks so much!
Jess 🙂

It is so nice to have live ballet back with performing Summertime at the Ballet 🥰😍

I don’t know about you, but I’m beyond excited to have the performing arts back LIVE in Melbourne 🙌

There’s a paucity of literature regarding pelvic floor dysfunction in dancers, but one study found a prevalence rate of urinary incontinence in 43% of ballet dancers (Thyssen et al., 2002). Big number right? Think it’s time to find out more? 🙋‍♀️

What you looking at Kitty?... 😝

When was the last time you had a look down there?.. Everyone should be aware of their anatomy, what it looks like and how it feels.

The more familiar that you become with your body the sooner you’ll realise if something just doesn’t feel right, and get help if required.

Do you suffer from painful s*x?... painful periods?.... pelvic pain?

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy can help. Treatment varies for each person and is very individualised to your presentation.

However treatment commonly includes:
• education on the anatomy and the muscle function
• pain science education
• pelvic floor down training / relaxation techniques
• general relaxation, which may include through mindfulness practice
• breathing exercises
• manual muscle release
• the use of dilator therapy

There are various conditions that may cause pelvic pain, including;

• endometriosis (a condition where the cells similar to those that line the uterus are found elsewhere in the body)
• adenomyosis (a condition where the cells from the lining of the uterus are found within the muscle layer of the uterus)
• overactive pelvic floor muscles
Pain with s*x may also be due to:
• vulvodynia (pain / burning of the v***a)
• vaginismus (involuntary contraction of the pelvic floor muscles)

You are not alone. Please speak to your local health professional and discuss your concerns.
Please don’t hesitate to be in contact with me if you have any queries

Caffeine!

Caffeine is the most consumed stimulant drug in the world, with (on average) an Aussie drinking just over 9 caffeinated drinks per week.

But why is this important?

Caffeine has a diuretic effect, meaning it causes an increased production of urine. PLUS it is a bladder irritant, which may cause increased excitability in the bladder muscle.

So...?

Due to this, increased caffeine consumption may lead to you developing symptoms such as:
- Increased urinary frequency. .
- Increased urinary urgency. .
- Urinary Incontinence. .
- Bladder pain.

Do you have any of these symptoms? If so, education, advice and a personalised training program from a pelvic floor physio can help!

Pain with in*******se after having a baby?

You are not alone! Discomfort with in*******se is common, with research finding a 21.2% prevalence rate.

The main risk factors are perineal trauma (tears or episiotomy), instrumental delivery & low oestrogen levels.

If this is you - help is available. Pelvic Health Physios can provide education and treatment to help. These include:

• Pelvic floor muscle down training (relaxation training).

• Teaching you breathing techniques to help with your pelvic floor muscle relaxation.

• Desensitisation of the sensitive tissue.

• Scar tissue release.

• The use of trainers.

• Discussion with your OB / GP if prescription of topical oestrogen is required.

Additionally, whilst in*******se is uncomfortable it is super important to continue to enjoy your s*xual relationship & intimacy through other types of play 🙂

Exercising in pregnancy, given it’s safe for you to do so, has many vital benefits for both mum and bub.

The current guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week. This should include a mix of cardio and resistance training.

Also, remember your pelvic floor exercises 3 x day to reduce the risk of pelvic floor dysfunction such as incontinence / prolapse.

Check out my latest blog post to find out more 😏 (link in bio) or contact me

If you’re unsure if you can exercise in pregnancy please speak to your health care practitioner before commencing exercise.

Separation of the Re**us Abdominis Muscle (DRAM) may occur for several reasons including weight gain, hormonal factors and to allow for the expanding abdominal wall during pregnancy.

DRAM is common, reportedly affecting 100% of women at 35 weeks gestation.

Physio treatment is individualised for each specific presentation, but you can expect education, support garment advice (if required) and an individualised exercise rehab program. This particularly focuses on core retraining and graduated abdominal loading.

Check out my blog post on DRAM for more info 🙌 link in bio / below

https://18physio.com.au/pre-post-natal/why-should-you-see-a-physio-if-you-have-an-abdominal-separation/

If you dont know if you have a DRAM have it assessed. However, a common sign people may notice is abdominal doming / bulging. Ask your healthcare professional for advice if you notice this.
