Every Victorian Hospital to implement a Disability & Carer Policy during the Covid period

29/08/2021

Today my son told me is is worried when I am old or not around who would look after him.
What a relief !!!
We now can, together, work out our future and his future and set some concrete plans down.
This is liberating as it a silent worry I have carried, like many other fellow carer's, that I never dared to share with him prior to this.....😍

'I am not disabled, I am just unable to do some things' (James 25 autistic)

Mum 'I think I am ready for work'
'Great James', now this is a great idea but also a big move with lot's to learn'.
Follow my son's journey in his venture to gain employment. James is a 25 year old verbal autistic. James is gifted with a remarkable memory spanning way back to infancy. James also has a mild intellectual disability, however, very impressive with an eye for detail and needing things to be in order and having a set routine would make him a dedicated worker.
Just like all progress in his life, it takes time, patience and a great support team to achieve goals. James has a great team.
I am proud of him, even though I have spent the whole weekend telling him to 'slow down' you cannot just walk into a workplace and ask to have a job. There is a lot to learn. He will slowly understand the whole process.
Have fun following his journey, it will be light hearted and even some videos he has lined up.

When your adult autistic son approaches you to say he wants to get a job. Brilliant, but it is small steps and learning the little things(which are big things really)
I thought I would break this down into small steps, it gives him more clarity.

Transition into adulthood post schooling:
Tip #1-Slow steps and buddying with a trusted support worker may be a good start.
