Peninsula Health category 3 (non-urgent) elective surgery waiting lists for gynaecological surgery and other specialties have blown out to more than 700 days!
If you or your loved one is on a category 3 waiting list, Stat Surgery suggests that you:
1. Contact your relevant elective surgery booking office and confirm that the waiting list is as prolonged as we report (different surgical specialties can have different waiting list queues).
2. Request a second medical opinion (can be a GP but preferably a specialist with waiting list privileges in the same or another public hospital) in an attempt to upgrade your waiting list urgency category.
2a. Consider obtaining a referral to see a specialist with waiting list privileges at another public hospital with a shorter waiting list.
3. Failing step 2, consider commencing private health insurance, as you will be eligible for private hospital surgery in 365 days, less than the reported wait on your current category 3 waiting list.
4. Consider self funding your surgery in a private hospital if you are in the financial position to do so (you may need to consult your financial advisor). You should consider this option particularly if your employment has been negatively impacted by your surgical condition. Note that there are medical finance providers who can discuss financing options with you.
