Stuart Place and I went to school together and now heâs cycling to âthe moon and backâ to raise funds for life saving treatment for his son and other children with a rare genetic condition. If you are in a position to, please support the cause!
âď¸ School holidays arenât stress-free for every child; for some, they bring the weight of transitions and new uncertainties. Therapy can provide a safe space to explore these feelings, plan ahead, and celebrate each unique step forward. From regular sessions to telehealth, letâs make this break one of growth and readiness!

Itâs all about momentum! đ Just as we reach glimpses of personal progress, children do tooâoften during their therapy sessions. By staying committed during the holidays, we can work together to keep skills fresh and goals in reach. Therapy shouldnât feel endless but purposeful.

If your littlie struggles with deep breathing - an essential skill for calming the nervous system and getting back to a state of calm, try having cotton wool ball races! Use straws if you like, or just blow directly on the cotton wool balls and watch as they move to the finish line!

đŹ Holidays often mean big transitions are around the cornerânew grades, new friends, new routines. This can stir up excitementâŚand anxiety. Continuing therapy during the break can help keep those transitions in focus and prepare your child to step into the new year with confidence.

Parents often ask whether it is worth going ahead with assessing their child for ADHD or autism, and if so, when is the best time. Our answer is always unequivocally ASAP. The earlier a child is diagnosed, the sooner parents, teachers, therapists etc. are able to support their specific needs. This can also help avoid self-esteem problems when a child starts to notice that they're struggling with certain aspects of school or life that their peers are sailing through. If you have questions, your GP or paediatrician are a great starting point, but you can also speak to allied health professionals such as a psychologist, speech pathologist or OT if you feel your concerns are not being heard. This can allow you to work through your concerns in more detail and develop a plan for moving forward - regardless of whether assessment is the recommended pathway.

We LOVE a relaxation script and one that involves tensing and relaxing muscles is great for teaching kids the physiological difference between being stressed and relaxed. Always practise relaxation outside of a stressful situation so the skills can be developed without a negative association...

đĄ Skill-building doesnât stop when school does! Holidays give your child a chance to work on and reinforce what theyâve learned in therapy without the extra load of homework and busy routines. Maintaining therapy during this period could be the difference between holding onto progress or starting fresh next year.

Hi, Iâm Amanda Abel - a paediatric psychologist, mum, registered SOS feeding therapist, and founder of Northern Centre for Child Development (NCCD) and Hawthorn Centre for Child Development (HCCD) â multidisciplinary paediatric practices in Melbourne. AND my latest venture is to provide my services from Beechworth Surgery in North-East Victoria.
Clinically, and as youâll see in my online courses and individual consults, I draw on my own experiences of being a parent along with my extensive training and well-honed skill set to get families thriving. Having worked with families for almost two decades, as a psychologist for the past 12 years in a variety of settings, and a valued board member of the Autism Behavioural Intervention Association, I love building the confidence of the adults in the lives of children so that they can connect meaningfully, help them reach their full potential, and live a life that reflects their values.
Appearing on Channel 7 and 9 News and regularly featuring in print media, I also contributed to Finch Publishingâs âWorking Mumsâ book, where I shared my insights about juggling a business and parenting. So, to the busy parents out there â I get you! Its hard!
Working directly and indirectly with hundreds of clients each year (and leading my team of psychologists in my paediatric practices in Melbourne) my mission is for parents to enjoy the journey - to make the often challenging and overwhelming job of being a parent something that can be appreciated in the moment - even if those moments are fleeting at times!
By encouraging a more positive parenting experience for parents, the goal is that the outcomes for kiddos also improves (this is what the research says anyway!). I love helping parents navigate the tricky minefield that is parenting - whether it is helping in the diagnosis of their child, or providing parenting support for behavioural and feeding challenges.
So, get in touch with any questions and until next time - enjoy!
