An Osteochondroma, also known as an Exostosis, is a benign bump on a bone that is quite common in children and adolescents. Some patients and families have a condition where they grow osteochondromas everywhere, on all their bones. Most children and young adults present with just one single bump.

An osteochondroma is made of up normal bone with cartilage covering It. It grows outwards from the bone. The bump itself is not painful, but they may irritate tendons or muscles, and very rarely can press on important nerves.

Osteochondromas grow more quickly when a child is having a growth spurt. This means they are frequently noticed when a child begins their adolescent growth spurt. They most commonly appear near the knee, but can occur at the ankle, the shoulder, or on any bone.

Osteochondromas that are not causing problems can be left alone. If they are large, surgery can be performed to remove them. This involves an anaesthetic, making a cut in the skin, and using a chisel to carefully remove the bump from the bone. Patients will be a little sore afterwards, but usually do not need plaster casts or extended periods on crutches.

An Osteochondroma may appear large or dramatic, particularly on an X-Ray, but the team at VicOrtho have extensive experience in managing them and can explore the safest and most efficient plan for your child!

X-rays are a very important tool in many paediatric orthopaedic conditions such as fractures, hip dysplasia and scoliosis. VicOrtho takes this process seriously and has partnered with Lake Imaging to provide what we believe is the best paediatric radiology service in Melbourne.

Our aims are clear – high quality, low radiation and accurate imaging.

Radiographs are taken to diagnose, manage and follow many orthopaedic conditions and must be tailored to the age of each child very carefully. Just as it takes skill to get the perfect photograph, a radiograph not only has be positioned accurately but the lighting or radiation should be as low as possible with all the features visible. Our partnership with Lake Imaging has the following features:

1. In house service that reduces the need for follow-up consultations.
2. Surgeons available onsite to direct, assist and position patients with the radiographer.
3. Digital radiology for immediate access to images and radiology reports.
4. Ability to directly refer and book more complex imaging such as CT, MRI, Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine.
5. Surgeons, radiologists and radiographers working together to develop and refine radiology protocols.

COVID-19 update

Elective surgery is now back to 75% capacity with restrictions possibly easing further soon. Please be patient whilst all VicOrtho surgeons and their staff do their very best to triage patients on their long surgical wait lists.

Your surgeon’s administration team will be in contact with you once a surgery date becomes available.

We thank you for being so patient during these challenging times and look forward to private hospital admissions for elective procedures being accepted at 100% capacity soon.

We will keep you all updated with the DHHS announcements as they become available.

COVID-19 Elective surgery update.

DHHS continue to limit elective surgery admissions to Category 1 surgical procedures only. Cat-1 admissions are restricted to life-threatening procedures or those that are required to avoid an emergency admission.

VicOrtho surgeons are continuing to adhere to the current DHHS restrictions and will contact patients waiting for surgical procedures once restrictions have eased.

We trust you all stay well during this current pandemic and if you have any questions about your surgical admission timing please contact your surgeon’s rooms directly.
