OT's who want to develop their Trauma Informed practices, can implement trauma-informed principles - essentially are foundational guidelines- designed to integrate trauma awareness into various practices and settings to minimize re-traumatisation and promote healing.

These TI principles are:

Safety:
OT's can cultivate physical & emotional safety and design and provide safer environments

Trustworthiness and Transparency: OT's can provide clear, transparent communication and actions, which builds trust

Peer Support:
OT's can embed peer support services into practice & encourage mutual support and respect among people with shared experiences

Collaboration and Mutuality:
OT's can enable and promote shared decision-making and power balance in relationships

Empowerment, Voice, and Choice:
OT's can recognise and utilise the strengths of people and consitently provide opportunities for choice-making

Cultural, Historical, and Gender Issues: OT's can address and respect cultural, historical, and gender-specific factors to avoid stereotypes and promote inclusive practices

These trauma-informed principles are interrelated and mutually reinforcing, aiming to create environments that are sensitive to the needs of trauma survivors and conducive to their recovery

I get to work with a group of amazing paediatric OT's tomorrow - how lucky am I! Facilitating Trauma Informed Care OT (TIC OT) Training combined with TIC OT consultation for staff working with families experiencing complex trauma. Included in the introductory training will be topics such as,: understanding trauma & how children & their families might respond when they have experienced acute, as well as chronic, and complex trauma; ways OT's can support clients/families who are/have experienced trauma; what OT's can keep in mind when providing interventions, including OT specific work; and being the TIC OT you aspire to be (which includes CARE for yourself also within the model of TIC).
