There are many ways of doing Yoga. With the body (Asana) with the breath (Pranayama), the hands and heart (Mudra, Karma)…but here is also another branch that often goes unrecognised: the yoga of supporting our fellow human beings. 🦋 The Veg Out Markets in St. Kilda are a staple in our calendar. Taking place on the first Saturday of every month, they are one of my favourite ways to connect with those who feed us, whose hard-work and connection to earth provide us with full bellies and even fuller hearts. 💐 If you’ve never been, I highly recommend. A wonderful wholesome beginning to the weekend! 💖

Breathing Room takes place EVERY Friday, 5-6PM in Sandringham. Both chairs and cushions are available, plenty of yummy Yogi Tea is on offer to ensure maximum comfort and ease.

For many years, I have been rebelling against the dilutions, misconceptions and false-ideals of “Modern Yoga”. I vehemently believe in the traditional ways, what some might even call Old Fashioned, where the spiritual practice is aligned (not ignored) with the physical experience of posture; whilst highlighting the power within the foundation of breath and meditation. If you share in these beliefs and want to experience a deeper, more holistic Yoga (without any backflips or somersaults) come join me at one of my classes. Feel the difference and know it’s real.

After more than 4 decades practicing and teaching yoga, one thing has become clear. The students who experience the deepest and most profound transformation are those who are rarely chasing perfection or intensity; they are looking to understand themselves, to meet themselves where they are. The practice of yoga is less about how it looks, more about how it feels. Not just the physical action, but the reaction in the entire energetic system. This is something that has fallen away from the modern iteration of yoga. If you yourself have ever felt that something is lacking from modern yoga places, you’re probably right. There is another way to practice, one that honours the breath, the nervous system; and the quiet, intelligent wisdom of the body and mind. If that is the direction you feel drawn towards, you are in the right place. At our classes, the body is not defined by the shape it makes, but is accepted and honoured for where it already is. The energy is nurtured whilst evolving for the better. The breath is supported as a foundation to everything we do. The whole of you is found and taught to return to a state of ease. The rest (the expectations, the comparisons, the past) falls away. You become one, once again, with your serene singularity. Everyone is welcome to any of the classes we offer in our Sandringham Yoga Shala. There are no limits to how wonderful we can feel in our bodies and our breath. Discover the expanse within you. A few little practices to remind us of the power of the breath.
🩷 Vishama Vritti Breath:
Clasp the fingers and hold them at the back of your head. Inhale through the nose, sending the elbows back, opening the heart and looking up at the sky. Exhale through pursed lips, elbows moving towards one another as you round the back softly. Feel the simultaneous actions of your front and back lungs as they expand to let in more oxygen.
💚 Ear Glide:
Mae the classic Mork & Mindy “Nanu Nanu” hands and slot your ear into the V. Slide up and down briskly, inhaling through the nose, exhaling with a sigh. Feel the balance restored. Feel the thoughts cleared and a free flow of energy activating.
💛Open Heart:
Do a thumbs up! This is Mushtikam Mudra for ‘wholeness of breath’. Hold both arms in front of your heart, inhaling with one long, soft, deep breath whilst extending the arms out into a T at shoulder height. Exhale through purse lips to bring arms back in front of chest and into the heart centre.
💜 Anuloma Viloma (Alternate Nostril Breath):
Make Gyan mudra (pointer to thumb-tip) with your least-dominant hand. With your other, rest your index and centre fingers at the 3rd eye. Use the thumb to gently close the right nostril, inhale comfortably through the left. Once full, close the left nostril with the ring/ pinky finger, exhaling completely through the right. Inhale right…exhale left…continue until bliss is restored!

Breath is the only function of the body that is both automatic and sovereign. Every breath means you are allowed to take control of your story, your rhythm and your space. Every conscious breath says I choose life, I reclaim space, I am here now. You are allowed to return to breath again and again until it feels like home.
Come to my home, to find the home inside yourself, this Friday at Breathing Room.
