How Do We Treat Chronic Diseases ( Part 1)

Dr. Sarah Liu (Acupuncturist, Chinese Medicine Practitioner, Herbal Dispenser )

Today I will introduce the Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM ) treatment methods for 10 common diseases. In fact, TCM can treat far more than these 10 diseases, it has unique advantages in treating chronic diseases such as pain relief, internal diseases, gynaecological diseases, and skin diseases. From now on, we will often share the methods and stories of Chinese medicine treatment, to help everyone develop some knowledge of Chinese medicine, and know that there are other ways to fight diseases.

1). Migraine: Migraines were once considered as one of the most difficult diseases to cure in the world. However, it indeed is not as difficult as it seems. Most people's migraines are not caused by internal lesions in the brain but caused by muscle tension after long-term mental stress. Often the root of the problem is in the neck, shoulders, and back muscles.
We can clearly identify that when we release tension in the shoulder and neck muscles through acupunctural pressure points, the migraine can disappear immediately, so I always advise my patients to come to the clinic as soon as the migraine attack occurs, because the treatment effect in the early stages of pain can be cured immediately.

2) Neck and Shoulder pain: Due to the popularization of mobile phones and computers, people work in front of these devices for longer than the healthy amount, which is the main cause of neck and shoulder pain sufferings. In short, neck and shoulder pain are closely related to people's bad posture. To treat this disease, we can use needling to relax neck and shoulder muscle directly, it is also can solve it by checking the meridians passing through the neck and shoulder and relax the blocked points along the meridians, or we can use distal points to adjust this area’s disbalance, for example, some points on hands, wrist, calves, and ankles also can treat neck and shoulder pain, we call it distal points or balance points.
3)Lumbar pain: The waist is the central bridge of the human body, a part that undertakes the communication between the upper and lower parts of the human body. It is also the most vulnerable part of the human body. By asking the patient to do certain movements, we can determine which muscle is injured. By pressing certain points, we can know which meridian is blocked by feel, we call it “Qi and Blood stagnation”.
In recent years Western Medicine research explains pain from a fascia viewpoint. Research also mentions that the pain in the muscles caused by trigger points are hyperirritable spots and palpable nodules in the taut bands of the skeletal muscles' fascia. Although the way of explanation is different, we still can see these two types of medicines both acknowledge pain is blockage. The treating way is also need treat local pain points and distal balance points, you may do not believe, sometimes the balance points of lumbar is at forehead or face.

4)Knee pain: The knee joint bears the pressure of the upper body. Apart from the wear and tear of the knee joint, if the knee pain is caused by its surrounding muscles, tendons, and fascia, the way of treating is the similar with other part of body ache. However, If the knee pain is due to severe wear and tear in the joint, that is not the scope of acupuncture treatment.

5) Ankle sprain: When an ankle is sprained, many people choose to rest at home and wait for the injured part to heal. However, the best thing to do is to take an X-ray immediately to confirm that there is no fracture, especially in the case of falling from stairs or heights. This acute stage is the best period for acupuncture treatment, especially using the principle of symmetrical balance of the human body. Acupuncture can quickly adjust the balance of the human body by needling acupuncture points on the wrist, so that the sprain can recover as quickly as possible without sequelae. On the contrary, if you just wait for the injured part to heal itself, within half a year or a year, the injured part can easily be sprained again. This is the different result of timely intervention.

Why can acupuncture treat pain?

Acupuncture, an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine, has been used for three thousand years to treat disease and relieve pain. By piercing some specific points on the surface of the human body with special metal fine needles, certain therapeutic purposes can be achieved.
In the Chinese medical book "Huangdi Neijing", there was a discussion of "taking pain as the acupoint", that is, where there is pain, the needle should be inserted there. In addition, the "Huangdi Neijing" also has a discussion of "selecting acupoints along the meridians", and acupuncture is placed on the acupoints far away from the pain site, and the analgesic effect is achieved by dredging the meridians.

Analgesic Mechanism of Acupuncture

Acupuncture works on various parts of the central nervous system, including the spinal cord, brainstem, cerebral ganglia, and cerebral cortex, to relieve pain. The central mechanisms of acupuncture action include neurohumoral and neurotransmitters, which are involved in analgesia.
• At the level of the spinal cord, spinal opioids, glutamate, norepinephrine, and serotonin are key elements of acupuncture analgesia.
• At the brain level, endogenous opioid peptides, the limbic system play an important role in regulating analgesia.
Various studies on acupuncture have shown that acupuncture analgesia is initiated by stimulating the small afferent sensory nerve fibers that innervate the muscles. These signals then send impulses to the spinal cord, ultimately affecting the supraspinal centers.
