The Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing is hosting a webinar about the new Support at Home program on Thursday 14 August 2–3pm (AEST).

There will be a short presentation followed by an extended question-and-answer session for older people, their families and other supporters. The Support at Home Program replaces the Home Care Packages Program and the Short-Term Restorative Care Programme from 1 November 2025.

Here’s me in my natural habitat — over-caffeinated, passionate, and talking all things home care with a local seniors group!

Last week I had the pleasure of presenting to a wonderful group of older Australians about how to stay independent in their own homes for longer.

After a lifetime of paying taxes, our seniors have absolutely earned this help.

But the truth is… the system is a beast. That’s where I come in.

I explain who’s eligible, what's covered and how to apply - breaking the process down into clear, manageable steps.

We talk about how seniors can take control of their funding choosing their own carers, rather than being assigned rotating staff from large providers with rigid schedules. I also show how using trusted, local support workers at lower hourly rates can give people more hours of help each week, and more say in how it’s delivered.

We talk about the difference between self-managing and provider-managed care, and how self-management can help you avoid common frustrations like:

❌ Support workers being assigned to you — even if they’re not the right fit

❌ Rotating staff — different faces every week, which can be stressful for those with memory loss or anxiety

❌ No control over your schedule — you’re one of hundreds of clients, so visits may be late… or cancelled altogether
