It was celebration time again at Panch Day Surgery Centre, with the team assisting Dr Uday Bhatt for his first Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments ( ) procedure for . CAIRS involves inserting donor corneal tissue into the patient's cornea to reshape it and improve vision.

This innovative technique offers new hope for patients with keratoconus looking to improve their vision and quality of life. Dr Bhatt is one of the few eye surgeons in Victoria who performs CAIRS.

Between optometry student observations, International Nurses' Day and CPR/fire training, Forest Road Day Surgery in Hurstville has been a hive of activity! Final year Deakin University optometry student Alicia Vilaisarn travelled interstate from Victoria to spend a memorable day observing Dr Tess Huynh's theatre list. She also sat in on Dr Huynh's consults, conveniently located right next door at Vision Eye Institute Hurstville.

Meanwhile, the Forest Road nursing and CSSD staff gathered together to enjoy some delicious treats to celebrate International Nurses' Day before tackling their CPR and fire training refresher courses.

Dr Rahul Chakrabarti is privileged to have been invited to be the first ophthalmologist in Australia to have implanted the new OphthalmoPRO MAXVision™ TORIC IOL at Panch Day Surgery in Victoria. 'This is German engineering at its best – it is going to be a real game changer for my patients,' he says of the lens, which incorporates principles of both EDOF and multifocal diffraction.

On hand to support Dr Chakrabarti create history were the Panch team, including Director of Nursing Victoria Lawal and Vision Hospital Group Quality Coordinator Nicole Moore.

Dr Chakrabarti is an Australian trained, cataract and refractive surgeon and comprehensive ophthalmologist. He completed subspecialty fellowships in strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear and Alfred Hospitals, before obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.

He has completed further refractive surgery training at the prestigious London Vision Clinic, and the Zeiss Nethradhama Eye Institute in Bangalore, India.

A very warm welcome to ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon Dr Aifric Martin, who has joined our team at Boroondara Day Surgery in Hawthorn. In a sign of things to come, it was all smiles for her first theatre list with support from Director of Nursing Margarette Cortez and the wonderful Boroondara team!

Dr Martin is an internationally trained ophthalmologist specialising in comprehensive anterior segment surgery, including and . Having performed over 1,000 procedures, she has a proven track record of surgical excellence.

Dr Martin graduated with honours in medicine from University College Dublin and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) for her research exploring innovations in cataract surgery. After completing her foundational ophthalmology training at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin, she undertook further fellowship training in cataract and corneal surgery at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne.

It's welcome down under to ophthalmic surgeon Dr David Lubeck, who joins us at North Queensland Day Surgery Centre in Townsville. Dr Lubeck is a world-renowned cataract, corneal, refractive and advanced anterior segment surgeon, who practised in Chicago for 30 years and was responsible for the introduction and advancement of many cutting-edge procedures and technologies. He was also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary.

VHG is committed to the health and safety of its patients and proudly participates in the National Hand Hygiene Audit Program. This initiative by the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Healthcare aims to improve hand hygiene practices in Australian hospitals.

Latest audit figures show our total hand hygiene moments (93.4%) exceeding the national average of 86.6% and the endorsed benchmark of 80%.

Hand hygiene is conducted in accordance with the ‘five moments’:
