As temperatures rise again tomorrow in Melbourne, our pets are at serious risk of heat stroke - especially brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, Frenchie's, Boxers, and Persians.
These breeds struggle to cool themselves efficiently and can overheat very quickly, even on what feels like a โ€œnormalโ€ warm day.

๐Ÿพ Hot ground = hidden danger
When the air temperature is around 30ยฐC, bitumen and asphalt can reach 50โ€“60ยฐC!
Thatโ€™s hot enough to burn paw pads in seconds - and remember, theyโ€™re not wearing any protection on their paws.

โš ๏ธ Signs of heat stress include:
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Lethargy or weakness
- Bright red or pale gums
- Vomiting or collapse

๐Ÿ’ง How to keep your pet safe:
- Walk early morning or late evening (a rest day is ok too)
- Check the ground with your hand - if itโ€™s too hot for you, itโ€™s too hot for them
- Provide constant access to shade and fresh water
- Never leave pets in cars - even briefly
- Make sure gates and fences are secure with the risks of sever winds

If youโ€™re ever worried your pet may be overheating, seek veterinary care immediately - heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency. Stay cool, stay safe.
