In remedial massage, oftentimes, the feet are treated based on an assessment that might indicate the need - pain, misalignments, inflammation, lower leg problems and so forth.
The same reasons might lead the practitioner in other modalities, and approaches.
If we broaden our approach – and view the body whole-istically, draw from other ancient practices and thousand-old traditions (namely, the east), merge with modern science knowledge, our practice and our methods, our decisions, and treatments become oh so much richer, deeper - for the practitioner and for the client.
The feet are about stability, poise, balance and mobility and engagement in life as a human!
They are also the part of our body that is the most Yin in TCM. When we end a treatment on the feet - even just subtly, gently, a few touches - we are stimulating the excess yang energy downwards into the earth. We are inviting our client to open to restfulness, to the non-doing, to receiving, to night, to really good sleep!
We are stimulating many organs via the 60+ acupoints on the feet.
We are, also, reinforcing a deep sense of body awareness, via the abundance of sensory receptors that help us stay and feel balanced.
Choosing to end a manual therapy treatment on the feet can shift the client's mental overactivity to deep calm and peace.
Choosing how to end a treatment is just as important as how to start and everything in between!
All with intention and purpose..
How do you end a treatment?
And what is your decision based on?
