🧦❀️ This Friday, 5th June, we proudly support and celebrate β€” a movement dedicated to raising awareness for the mental health and wellbeing of doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and all healthcare workers.

Did you know that CrazySocks4Docs was founded right here in Melbourne by our very own cardiologist, Dr Geoff Toogood? πŸ’›

What began with one pair of mismatched socks has grown into an international movement helping break down the stigma surrounding mental health in healthcare. The message is simple but powerful β€” it’s okay not to be okay, and healthcare workers deserve support too.

Every year on CrazySocks4Docs Day, people wear crazy or mismatched socks to:
🧦 Start conversations about mental health
🧦 Support colleagues who may be struggling silently
🧦 Raise awareness of burnout, anxiety, depression and su***de among healthcare workers
🧦 Remind clinicians to look after themselves while caring for others ❀️

At Rotar Heart Health, we are incredibly proud that one of our own specialists helped create a movement that continues to make a difference to healthcare workers around the world.

πŸ“Έ This Friday, put on your craziest socks, take a photo and help spread awareness by sharing it using

πŸ’“ Did you know? Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm disorder in Australia.

AF occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beat irregularly and often rapidly, which can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure, palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), AF affects approximately 2% of the Australian population β€” more than 500,000 Australians. In 2021–22, there were around 193,700 hospitalisations where AF was recorded, and AF contributed to 18,100 deaths in Australia in 2022. ()

The good news is that AF can often be detected and managed early with appropriate cardiac testing and specialist care.

At Rotar Heart Health, we diagnose and manage patients with atrial fibrillation and other heart rhythm disturbances. Our cardiologists have experience in arrhythmia and AF management, including investigations such as ECGs, Holter monitoring, echocardiography, and ongoing cardiac care.

πŸ’™ Did you know we now offer Bubble Studies at Rotar Heart Health? πŸ’™

A Bubble Study (saline contrast echocardiogram) is a specialised ultrasound of the heart that helps detect abnormal blood flow between the heart chambers β€” something a standard echo may not always pick up.

πŸ‘‰ What is a Bubble Study?
It’s a simple and painless test performed during your echocardiogram. A small cannula is placed in your arm, and sterile saline with tiny β€œbubbles” is injected. These bubbles are safely filtered by the lungs, but on ultrasound they allow us to clearly see how blood moves through your heart. ()

πŸ«€ Why is this important?
A bubble study is particularly useful in detecting conditions like a patent foramen ovale (PFO) or other small shunts in the heart that may otherwise go unnoticed. These can be associated with unexplained (cryptogenic) stroke, transient ischaemic attacks (TIA), or other embolic events. ()

πŸ“Œ Who may benefit from a Bubble Study?
GPs may consider referring patients for a bubble study if there is:
β€’ History of unexplained stroke or TIA
β€’ Suspected PFO or atrial septal defect
β€’ Unexplained systemic embolism
β€’ Assessment of right-to-left shunts
β€’ Further evaluation when standard echocardiography is inconclusive

(These indications align with published clinical research and echocardiography guidelines on appropriate use of saline contrast studies.) ()

βœ… What to expect:
β€’ Quick, non-invasive and safe procedure
β€’ Painless (aside from a small cannula)
β€’ No recovery time β€” return to normal activities immediately
β€’ Performed by experienced cardiac professionals

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ For patients & GPs:
If you or your patient has had an unexplained neurological event or requires further cardiac assessment β€” speak to your GP or refer today to discuss whether a Bubble Study is appropriate.

πŸ’™ Exercise Stress Testing at Rotar Heart Health πŸ’™

Did you know that an Exercise Stress Test (Stress Echo) can detect early signs of heart disease before symptoms become serious?

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) often develops silently β€” and for many people, the first sign can be a major cardiac event. A stress test helps assess how well your heart performs under physical exertion, identifying reduced blood flow, abnormal rhythms, and potential risks that may not appear at rest.

🚨 Why these matters:
According to leading heart health guidelines, early detection and prevention are key to reducing your risk of heart attack and long-term complications. If you have risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, family history, or symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath β€” this test could be lifesaving.

πŸ‘‰ When should you consider a Stress Echo?
β€’ As part of your Heart Health Check
β€’ If you have cardiac symptoms
β€’ If you have multiple cardiovascular risk factors
β€’ If you require medical clearance for work (including aviation or defence roles)

✈️ Specialised Services at Rotar Heart Health:
βœ”οΈ CASA-compliant testing for aviation medical clearance
βœ”οΈ Experienced doctors trained in aviation cardiology assessments
βœ”οΈ Registered providers for the Australian Defence Force (ADF)
βœ”οΈ Accurate, safe, and guideline-based testing

πŸ’₯ And most importantly β€” WE BULK BILL πŸ’₯
At Rotar Heart Health, we believe essential cardiac testing should be accessible to everyone. No out-of-pocket costs for eligible patients.

πŸ’¬ Take action today:
Speak to your GP about your Heart Health Check and whether an Exercise Stress Test is right for you. Prevention starts early β€” don’t wait for symptoms.
