R U OK? A conversation that could change a life
R U OK Day is an annual su***de prevention campaign held on the second Thursday of September in Australia. Whilst this day comes around once a year, it is a reminder that these conversations need to take place every day. Driven by research, asserting that communication with people can positively impact their mental health.
The theme for this year is Ask RUOK any day. A conversation can change a life.
R U OK? inspires us to connect and support the people around us who may be struggling.
You don’t need to be an expert to reach out – just a good friend and a great listener.
Start the conversation by asking R U OK? and listen with an open mind.
There are four steps:
1. Ask R U OK?
2. Listen
3. Encourage action
4. Check in
On our national day of action – Thursday 12 September – we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask R U OK?
Get involved and start the conversation today.
Staff are encouraged to visit the R U OK? website and learn how to ask. There’s also an extensive find help page with resources you can turn to if the person says they’re not OK.
Attached is information on how to start a conversation.
