A person's mid 40s - 50s represents an important period of time in their life. Ageing increases the likelihood of certain health problems occurring in midlife compared to our younger years. This incudes obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and osteoarthritis. And when you have one medical condition, your likelihood of getting another, otherwise known as a comorbidity, also increases.

That is why a 45-49 health assessment is so important - To identify risk factors commonly experienced in midlife early and prevent chronic conditions before they develop, and also manage existing conditions.

Designed as a bulk billed and once off 1-hour preventative health check, it is a good opportunity for our healthcare team to holistically explore your physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

You might feel well, but high blood pressure doesnโ€™t always cause symptoms unless severe.

Hence why it is important that you regularly check your blood pressure with a doctor. A quick 10 minute consultation can help prevent many cardiovascular conditions, kidney disease and even dementia.

Routine bulk billed check ups are available everyday.

You can also do a blood pressure check during a:
โœ… Heart health assessment (30+ and over, once yearly)
โœ… 45 - 49 health assessment (once off)
โœ… 75+ health assessment (once yearly)
โœ… New or review of a GP chronic condition management plan (up to 5 check-ups per year!)

Hypertension was the leading risk factor for mortality in Australia in 2023.

One cuff can ensure it no longer has to be.

Donโ€™t let Shingles catch you off guard.

โ€‹If youโ€™ve ever had chickenpox, the virus is still inside you, dormant in your nerves. As we age or our immune system weakens, it can reactivate as Shinglesโ€”a painful, blistering rash that can lead to long-term nerve pain.

โ€‹The good news? The Shingrix vaccine is highly effective, providing strong protection for 10 years.

โ€‹Is it FREE for you?

The 2-dose Shingrix course is government-funded for:
โ€‹โœ… Everyone aged 65+
โ€‹โœ… First Nations people aged 50+
โ€‹โœ… Immunocompromised adults (18+) with specific medical conditions

โ€‹Protect your quality of life.

As you age, changes to your body can occur, leading to an exacerbation of current conditions and an increased risk of certain chronic conditions, illnesses and incidents. These include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hearing loss, dementia, arthritis and falls.

75+ health assessments are designed to promote healthy ageing by minimising your risk of developing further ailments and allowing you to better manage existing conditions. Overweight and obesity are characterised as having excess body weight due to imbalances between energy intake (diet) and energy expenditure (physical activity). These have large implications on health contributing to conditions including heart disease, various cancers, type 2 diabetes and dementia. Moreover, the diseases overweight and obesity cause are severe, contributing the most to disability and mortality in Australia in 2024.

Anyone can become overweight or obese, whether you are a child or an adult. And many of the causes are not rooted in individual behaviour, but instead in biological, environmental, social and economic factors.

These include: limited access to healthy foods, active spaces, car dependent travel, jobs and school structures that promote sitting, hypothyroidism, PCOS, certain medications, cultural norms and family patterns.

Dementia is a degenerative brain disease which can affect a personโ€™s ability to function in their day to day life by impairing their memory, speech, emotions, thinking capabilities and mobility ๐Ÿง
In Australia, dementia is ranked the second leading disease in terms of how much it depreciates a personโ€™s quality of life and life overall. Although anyone can get dementia, it becomes more prevalent as a person ages, especially after 65.

What can you do? ๐Ÿค”

As there is no cure available for dementia, it is important to minimise the risks that can cause dementia. This can lower your risk of developing dementia by at least 45%. These include:

โœ… High blood pressure
โœ… High cholesterol
โœ… Being physically active
โœ… Not smoking
โœ… Avoiding harmful alcohol consumption
โœ… Having a healthy diet
โœ… Socialising with friends, family and the community
โœ… Doing activities that stimulate the brain (reading books, doing puzzles, learning new skills!)

What can we do? ๐Ÿค”

Our GPs will be able to identify and treat the medical conditions that increase dementia risk including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. If you think you are experiencing symptoms, they will also run cognitive screening tests to catch problems early and implement management plans for you to best take care of your health ๐Ÿ˜Š

If you would like an appointment, please call reception on (03) 9793 5395 or book online through HotDoc on https://www.hotdoc.com.au/medical-centres/dandenong-north-VIC-3175/north-dandenong-clinic/doctors
