Body condition scoring goes hand in hand with a diet analysis. It’s anther tool used to determine your horses calorie intake and expenditure of energy, this is the visual version right in front of you!

The NRCs guidelines work incredibly well for the majority of horses however some horses calorie requirements may be above or below their NRC predicted level. The right amount of calories your horse requires is whatever keeps them at a body condition score of 5 to 5.5. If your horse is gaining weight they may be consuming too many calories and vice versa, if your horse is losing weight then may not be consuming enough calories.

The most common system used for body condition scoring is the Henneke system. It’s a numerical scale ranging from 1 - 9 that evaluates the amount of fat on a horses body in various places, these include the loin, ribs, trailhead, withers, neck and shoulder.

What’s your horses body condition score?
