Compression therapy is one of the non-invasive methods used in the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases, including venous thrombosis, chronic venous insufficiency, and lymphoedema.

Its essence is controlled compression of appropriate intensity, the source of which are various compression products - tights, knee-length socks and stockings, and bandages. What else should you know about compression therapy?

Ge***al lymphedema is a buildup of fluid causing swelling in the soft tissues of the ge***al (crotch) area. A blockage or breakdown of the lymphatic system leads to leakage of lymph (fluid) into surrounding tissues. Standard treatment includes complex decongestive therapy, which uses a combination of drainage, compression bandages, pumps and exercise to ease the swelling.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes and you swelling in the legs, ankles or feet, compression socks, stockings or tights can help reduce the swelling and decrease the pain and discomfort.
If this is the case, I am sure you will be working with a General Practitioner, a diabetes educator, or a specialist on how to care for your feet and legs. Diabetes can lead to circulation problems and swelling in the feet, ankles or legs. This condition is called Peripheral Oedema. If this is the case, you should inspect your feet and legs, looking for swelling, small cuts or breaks in the skin. If these symptoms are recognised early, they are generally easier to improve, and it helps to avoid infections.
Compression socks, stockings and tight can help with swelling
Compression socks can help reduce oedema. Peripheral (meaning away from the centre therefore feet ankles legs) Oedema is usually caused by venous insufficiency.
This can be helped by using graduated compression stockings where the pressure id higher at the ankles than below the knee which helps pump the blood and lymph fluid towards the heart to aid venous flow. This compression also helps support the veins and valves reducing peripheral oedema.
If you have swollen legs and are not sure if it is caused by venous insufficiency, it is important to discuss with your medical team as there are certain conditions where people should not wear compression. If you have been diagnosed with Arterial insufficiency, you should not wear compression socks. Your doctor is the best person s to discuss this with before buying compression stockings.
