Across many cultures in the East, fire holds special meaning. In many Asian homes, particularly in Buddhist and Hindu traditions, lighting a lamp every day is a way to connect with divinity through light, fire, and grace.✨

The heat of fire is seen as capable of destroying any negative energy and presents a direct way to connect with the divine through the purification of energy.🔥

In the yoga tradition as well, fire is used as a special cleansing practice known as ‘Trataka,’ which is a fire-gazing practice that helps to sharpen mental clarity, dispel fogginess, and boost creativity in the mind. It also is a great way to improve focus and eyesight.🧘🏽‍♀️

These lamps are known as ‘diyas’ in India and are a useful tool to light the fire simply by pouring sesame oil (for example) and putting in a cotton wick that’s then burnt, helping the fire to keep burning longer. This is an explanation of how to use this tool.🪔
