Mainland Australia Coastwatchers (distinct home-defence role):

As well as the mostly Australian run Coastwatching Organisation in the Pacific islands which included British, Australian, New Zealand, US and Pacific Islander personnel, Australia also had RANVR administered civilian coastwatchers, many of them later enrolled in the RANVR, based around its mainland coastline, especially Northern Territory, where they operated alongside the The North Australia Observer Unit (NAOU / "Nackeroos" or "Curtin's Cowboys".

Volunteers (often the same types of civilians: station managers and missionaries) manned observation posts and reported any enemy naval or air activity approaching the continent. This included potential raiders, submarines, or invasion fleets during the 1942 crisis period (when Japan bombed Darwin, Broome, and other sites).

It was far lower-risk—no enemy occupation of the mainland occurred beyond raids—so there were no "stay-behind" guerrilla elements or executions on Australian soil.

The work was routine but vital for alerting mainland defences. Gaps in coverage were filled by recruiting more locals or giving some naval reserve status.

The mainland network predated and underpinned the island expansion; many original coastwatchers on the Australian coast continued their roles while the "screen" of islands became the forward line.

The mainland effort was essential but overshadowed by the dramatic island stories. Recent efforts include calls for a dedicated "mainland tribute" or memorial (e.g., in Brisbane) to recognise these coastwatchers separately from the Pacific ones. Surviving veterans (now all deceased) and units like the NAOU are commemorated through plaques, airfields (e.g., Nackeroo Airfield), and histories linking them to modern surveillance forces.

While the Pacific Islands Coastwatchers earned legendary status for their daring in the fight against Japan, the mainland network was the foundational home-defence backbone—quiet, vigilant observation that helped secure Australia itself.

Both were part of the same RAN-originated system but adapted to vastly different threats.
