We’re proud to have started an important patient trial for a potential treatment for Friedreich ataxia at Doherty Clinical Trials! As a core part of our mission, we’re honoured to support the development of new potential treatments for medical conditions that currently lack safe and effective treatments, so that we may be able to improve health outcomes for current patients and future generations. We sincerely thank our patients and participants for their support. Well done to our amazing clinical, operations and laboratory team pictured here!

Did you know? Human infection challenge studies can generate critical scientific insights and have the aim of making potential treatments for infectious diseases more rapidly available to communities globally.

Human infection challenge trials involve exposing healthy volunteer participants to a well-characterised infectious agent (such as a bacteria or virus) in a controlled environment. A well-characterised infectious agent means that “the bug” has been tested for safety in humans and this has been approved by our Ethics Committee. When testing a new vaccine or treatment, “the bug” is applied either after the volunteer has been vaccinated, or before they have received treatment.

People who take part in human challenge trials play an important role in advancing infectious disease research.

Ahead of International Women's Day, we would like to reflect on this year's theme, March Forward. As a relatively new clinical trial unit, we follow in the footsteps of those who came before us and we draw strength from the progress made by women who have advanced workplace rights and driven medical innovations. We also recognise the work that remains to be done to achieve gender equality. We are committed to taking strides within our organisation to be a part in creating a future where all women and girls entering the world of medical research can thrive in an environment of equality and opportunity.

Doherty Clinical Trials is calling on healthy volunteers to participate in a new Phase I clinical trial of a needle-free vaccine for avian influenza. The trial will assess the safety and tolerability of the influenza vaccine administered using the needle-free technology developed by Australian biotech company, Vaxxas.

Unlike traditional needle and syringe administration, which is injected into a muscle, Vaxxas’ High-Density Microarray Patch (HD-MAP) technology delivers the vaccine to the immune cells immediately below the skin surface.

Doherty Clinical Trials’ Chief Medical Officer, Professor James McCarthy said: “This new way of delivering vaccines, such as influenza, is very exciting as it could reduce some of the limitations associated with vaccination via traditional methods.”

Doherty Clinical Trials are proud to support the Blue Dragon Children's Foundation and as such, we’re getting behind some of the DCT team who will be tackling the Blue Dragon Marathon Walk this Sunday to raise funds for their vital work.

For over 20 years, Blue Dragon has been a leading agency in Vietnam’s fight against human trafficking, working tirelessly to not only reduce human trafficking, but to end it. Blue Dragon helps rescue women and children who have been trafficked and provides street kids access to medical care, food and education.

The Blue Dragon Marathon Walk takes place this Sunday, 8th September with members of the DCT team covering a whopping 42 kilometers. With Intrepid covering 100% of the administrative costs, every cent donated to their cause will go directly to helping youth in Vietnam.

We're right behind you Ivy, Nicola, Elaine and Thu-Anh! 💪❤

This International Clinical Trials Day, the team at Doherty Clinical Trials would like to acknowledge and thank all the participants who have given their time to support such vital work, both at Doherty Clinical Trials and the world over.

Without your support, the advancements in medical research that we have today, which has led to the eradication of diseases, the developments of vaccines and further integral research and understanding into therapies and treatments, would not have been possible.

In the words of ACRP - Association of Clinical Research Professionals, you really are the trailblazers among us.

Thank you.
