🔬 From a single fertilised egg to a developing blastocyst, the journey of each embryo is carefully supported and closely monitored in our lab.

At Newlife IVF, all embryos are grown in state-of-the-art time-lapse incubators (EmbryoScope), which allow us to continuously observe their development without disturbing their environment. This means we can track important milestones while maintaining stable, optimal conditions.

Embryos remain undisturbed from the time of insemination (via IVF or ICSI) until day 3, when we refresh the culture media (a specialised liquid solution used to support the growth of embryos outside the body). This process takes just a few minutes and is performed within bespoke IVF chambers that precisely control temperature, humidity and gas levels.

The refreshed media supports the second phase of growth, with embryos cultured through to day 6 – the point at which those with developmental potential typically reach the blastocyst stage (a ball of cells).

Due to underlying genetic, structural or metabolic factors, not all embryos will reach the blastocyst stage of development. However, our advanced culture system is designed to provide the most supportive environment possible, helping each embryo reach its full potential.

Egg freezing is a proactive way to preserve some of your younger, higher-quality eggs ‘on ice’, just in case you face fertility challenges later on. It’s not a guarantee for a baby, but it can improve your chances of pregnancy in the future.

For example:
❄️ Freezing 20 eggs before age 35 = ~80% chance of a baby
❄️ Freezing 40 eggs = increases this likelihood to ~95% chance

Here’s how it works:
To maximise egg collection, the ovaries are stimulated with hormone injections over 8–14 days. We monitor the developing follicles (fluid-filled sacs containing the eggs) via ultrasound, then collect the mature eggs on-site under light sedation – a process that takes just 10–15 minutes. The mature eggs are then frozen and stored in nitrogen tanks (like the one in this image) for future use.

Helping embryos stick 🔬

The final step in the IVF process is transferring the embryo into the uterus, and at Newlife IVF, we do everything we can to give it the best chance of success.

That’s why we apply EmbryoGlue to every embryo before transfer. It’s a special medium designed to help the embryo ‘stick’ to the uterine lining, just like its name suggests.

EmbryoGlue contains hyaluronan, a substance naturally found in the uterus during early pregnancy, and albumin, a protein that supports implantation. Together, these components help mimic the natural conditions of the uterus and may improve implantation, pregnancy and live birth rates.

Backed by evidence. Built into your care.

How do we choose which embryo to transfer?

When there’s more than one embryo to choose from, selecting the most suitable one can be a complex and considered process. From visual assessment to advanced lab technology, our team carefully evaluates each embryo to give patients the best chance of success.

S***m health starts months before conception.

Unlike women, who are born with all the eggs they’ll ever have, men produce new s***m every day. But something many people don’t realise is that it takes 2–3 months for s***m to fully develop and mature.

That means any lifestyle changes, such as improving diet, reducing alcohol, quitting smoking or upping your exercise, can take up to three months to affect s***m quality.

So if you’re trying to conceive (or planning to soon), now’s the time to think ahead and support your s***m health early. Small changes today can make a big difference down the track.

Sometimes, fertilisation needs a helping hand 🤝

In natural conception, the s***m triggers a surge of calcium ions inside the egg, a crucial step that ‘activates’ the egg and kickstarts embryo development. But in some IVF cycles, this calcium signal doesn’t always occur as it should. In these cases, assisted oocyte activation (AOA) may be used to support fertilisation.

AOA aims to replicate the natural process of egg activation. It involves using a chemical agent (known as a calcium ionophore) to artificially stimulate the egg, mimicking the natural calcium signal that a s***m would usually trigger.

This approach can improve fertilisation outcomes in cases where previous ICSI attempts had low or no fertilisation or in instances where s***m have an abnormal shape or function.

AOA isn't necessary for every IVF cycle. Your fertility specialist and our embryology team will recommend the technique best suited to your individual needs.

📸 This egg has just completed ICSI and is now in the waiting phase, where we watch closely for signs of fertilisation.

Do higher fees mean a greater chance of IVF success?

In Australia, private fertility clinics generally operate under two models: budget or premium. But how do you decide which is right for you?

There are key differences between lower and higher-cost clinics, and what those differences might mean for your treatment is explored in our blog written by Dr Nicole Hope: https://www.newlifeivf.com.au/budget-versus-premium-priced-ivf-clinics-does-success-cost-more/
