Oysters ๐Ÿฆช

One of my favourite ๐ŸŒŠ treats! Not only delicious, but also packed full of zinc, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, selenium, magnesium and much more! In Chinese Medicine they are great for nourishing the blood and yin, which is important for nourishing our skin, hair, nails, and supporting energy levels. Did you know that TCM practitioners also use oyster shell as a herb to treat patients? It has traditionally been used to calm the mind or โ€œshenโ€ of a person. The salty flavour also has the function of supporting the kidneys and preventing loss of fluid from the body e.g in cases of excessive sweating such as night sweats or spontaneous sweating.

Are you an oyster fan? If so, what is your favourite way to eat them?

Have you been feeling bloated?

According to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), bloating results from impaired digestion. The spleen is one of the organs responsible for digestion, and when weakened bloating may result.

What weakens the spleen?

1. Improper diet. Cold and damp foods weaken the spleen, so it it recommended to avoid or reduce these as much as possible. Examples include ice cream, cold salads, cold drinks, smoothies, dairy (particularly soft cheeses) and fried foods. These foods should be replaced with warm, cooked foods which are easier to digest such as soups, stews, casseroles, porridge and congee.

2. Overeating/eating quickly/eating while stressed. This means more work for your spleen and digestion. Try to eat mindfully and chew well to ensure you are digesting your food properly.

3. Stress/anger. Stress and anger cause Qi stagnation which impair digestion. Exercises such as meditation, yoga, Qi gong or going for a nice long walk can be great for reducing feelings of stress or anger.

4. Excessive worry. Worry directly weakens the spleen. As hard as it can be sometimes, try to avoid thinking of future events by being as present in the moment as possible. Meditation and deep breathing exercises are great for this!

Welcome winter โ„๏ธ

In Chinese Medicine, the focus during winter shifts towards conserving and replenishing our energy reserves. It is a time to retreat and recharge, allowing our bodies to deeply rest. Just as plants lie dormant during winter to gather strength for growth in spring, we too should prioritise R&R during this season.

Winter is an ideal time to nourish our bodies with warm, cooked foods and herbal teas. According to Chinese Medicine, warming foods help to invigorate our internal fire and support circulation. Think soups and stews with warming spices like ginger and cinnamon ๐Ÿฒ

Winter is also associated with the kidneys in Chinese Medicine. The kidneys are considered to be the foundations of our overall health, so it is important to provide extra support to our kidneys during this season. Incorporating kidney-nourishing foods into our diet, such as black sesame seeds, kidney beans, eggplant, seaweed, walnuts, and goji berries, are fantastic ways of supporting and strengthening our kidneys. Keeping the lower back, abdomen and feet warm is also very important as the kidney energy flows through these areas of the body. It is time to layer up, pull out those thick, wool socks and treat yourself to some relaxing foot baths!

Who is excited for winter?

Gui Pi Tang ๐ŸคŽ

An amazing herbal formula translated as โ€œRestore the Spleen Decoctionโ€. It has traditionally been used in Chinese Medicine to tonify Qi and blood and nourish the Heart and Spleen. What does this mean? When the Spleen is weakened (e.g with excessive worry or consumption of raw/cold foods), it cannot effectively perform its function of producing Qi (energy) and blood for the body, causing a deficiency of Qi and blood. It is therefore common to see symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, poor appetite, palpitations, and menstrual disorders such as abnormal bleeding or spotting.

Any of the symptoms sound familiar? How is your Spleen travelling?

Thank you to The Herb Grove Dispensary for these herbs ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŒฟ

Did you know that in Chinese Medicine the Heart is believed to house the "Shen", or the mind and spirit of a person?

This means that the state of your Heart (and blood) can affect your mental activities, emotions, memory, thinking, and sleep.

According to Chinese Medicine, a strong Heart with abundant blood can lead to a balanced emotional life, good memory, sharp thinking, and restful sleep. However, a weak Heart with insufficient blood may cause mental-emotional problems, poor memory, cloudy thinking, insomnia, or somnolence.

Does your Heart need some TLC? Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are great ways to support and nourish the Heart and blood โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ๐Ÿƒ Embracing Autumn ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚

Did you know that Autumn is associated with the Lungs and respiratory system in Chinese Medicine?

During this season, it is important to nourish the Lungs and protect them from dryness, as the cooler, drier conditions can lead to respiratory problems such as coughs and sore throats.

Try incorporating seasonal foods such as pears, apples and root vegetables into your diet, as well as warm drinks/tea to support and moisten the Lungs during this time. It is also a good time to practice deep breathing exercises and stay active to strengthen circulation and the immune system.

Does acupuncture hurt?

This is a commonly asked question, as many people associate needles with pain. Acupuncture needles are very thin and insertion is often painless. Needles are as thin as 0.14 - 0.25mm, similar to a strand of human hair! Sensations may be felt after a needle is inserted, which can include tingling, numbness, warmth, heaviness or a dull ache followed by a feeling of relaxation as they do their job. No sensation at all is also common.

Yin and Yang โ˜ฏ๏ธ

A Chinese Medicine theory used to describe opposite and complementary forces in nature. It is believed that natural harmony within the body is maintained when yin and yang are in balance, and when out of balance illness may arise.
