If you have a picky eater, you know the drill šŸ˜…

Offering the same food over and over again can feel completely pointless… but repetition is actually how kids learn to feel safe around new foods.

For many children, especially neurodivergent kids or those with feeding challenges, it can take MANY exposures before they feel comfortable enough to taste, let alone eat a new food.

And no, every exposure doesn’t have to mean taking a bite.

Looking, touching, smelling, licking, playing… it all counts.

So if you’re serving the same food for what feels like the 84th time — you’re not failing ā¤ļø

You’re building familiarity, confidence and trust around food.

As a feeding therapist, I see the impact lunchbox policing can have on children šŸ’”

Children at daycare, kinder and school are not responsible for what gets packed in their lunchbox.

And educators often don’t know the full picture:
āž”ļø Sensory sensitivities
āž”ļø Neurodivergence or medical needs
āž”ļø Anxiety around food
āž”ļø Feeding history
āž”ļø Family finances or food access
āž”ļø Cultural preferences
āž”ļø Parent capacity, time or meal prep challenges

Sometimes that ā€œplainā€ or ā€œbeigeā€ lunchbox contains the only foods that child currently feels safe eating.

I’ve worked with children who became too anxious to eat at school because they feared being judged, singled out, or ā€œgetting in troubleā€ for their food šŸ˜”

At this age, we should be focusing on:
āœ” Building positive food experiences
āœ” Reducing shame around eating
āœ” Encouraging confidence and curiosity
āœ” Supporting all foods neutrally

And if there are concerns about a child’s lunchbox, those conversations should always happen privately and respectfully with families — not through the child.

If you’re an early childhood centre looking for support around healthy lunchboxes, picky eating, or creating positive mealtime environments, I run workshops for both parents and educators. Get in touch to learn more.

Supporting families through the challenges of picky eating is at the heart of what I do ā¤ļø

There’s nothing better than helping parents feel less stressed, more confident, and seeing kids build comfort and confidence around food šŸ™Œ

Every child’s feeding journey is different — and my role is to help you understand the why behind your child’s eating and provide practical, realistic strategies that work for your family.

Even as a feeding therapist, my own child once had a very limited diet…

And the biggest lesson I learned?

āž”ļøPicky eating isn’t fixed with pressure, bribing, or sneaky veggies.

What actually worked:

šŸ‘‰Stopping comments about how much was eaten
šŸ‘‰Serving new foods alongside safe foods
šŸ‘‰Letting food play happen without stress
šŸ‘‰Reducing brand dependence by removing packaging
šŸ‘‰Creating predictable mealtime routines

Small shifts… but they completely changed the feeling around food in our house

I’m telling you this because I want you to know that calm mealtimes are possible!
