We couldn’t be happier with the work that the Therapy dogs who have met the Service Animals Australia Essential Standards for Therapy Dogs are doing. These dogs and their handlers have completed SPECIALISED training so that they can confidently and safely provide support in a variety of facilities around Australia. Friendly pet dog dogs might enjoy a cuddle and a pat at home, but this does not mean that they are ready to interact appropriately in an unfamiliar environment, or to work in settings where human behaviour is unpredictable, there is a lot of noise, crowds or visual stimulation that the dog has little experience in dealing with. Without the appropriate training, it is unfair on the dog to be asked to step in and provide support. Not all dogs can, or should, work in this role. Alongside a skilled handler, the right dog, with the right training can make an incredible difference. It is such a joy to watch them love being in this role and to see them turn a persons day around so effectively. 🥰
