The first few hours of a new placement can feel like a whirlwind for you and the child or young person.
Here are a few simple ways foster carers can create a warm, welcoming environment from day one:
✅ Set up their space
Make up the bed with fresh sheets, add a soft blanket, a nightlight, and maybe an age-appropriate book or toy.
✅ Pack a welcome bag
You could include essentials like toiletries, PJs, a toothbrush and a little something fun like a journal, colouring book or soft toy.
✅ Write a short note
A simple message like “We’re glad you’re here” can go a long way.
✅ Have a meal or snack ready
Comforting food can ease nerves and help build connection.
✅ Go slow and listen
Let them set the pace. Be available, but don’t overwhelm them with questions or information.
