The world is a scary place at the moment, and for those living with a disability it is even scarier. I can't imagine the fear being felt around Australia at the moment both NDIS participants as the government slowly leaks ideas of what changes they are planning in the hope that the real budget changes wont be so badly received.
NDIS Facts
Some participants rely on it to stay alive
Some participants rely on it to shower
Some participants rely on it to get out of bed
Some participants rely on it to mobilise
Some participants rely on it to socialise (this includes their support worker being the only person they see in their life)
Some participants rely on it to use their bowels
Some participants rely on it to empty their catheter bags or change their pads
Some participants rely on it to have a safe house to live in
Some participants rely on it to communicate
Some participants rely on it to breathe
Some participants rely on it to take life saving medication
Some participants rely on it to live independently
And I could go on...........
No one reading this would want assistance with any of the above if they had a choice. Before you make a negative statement about the NDIS at least think about it and remember the positive impact it has had on our society. If NDIS funding is cut by those who have been assessed as truly requiring it the following will happen;
Neglect leading to deaths
Surge in hospitalisations and deadlock at hospitals, there are no facilities for people with disabilities to live in with no NDIS funding.
Young people with disabilities being forced into aged care
Parents leaving the workforce to look after their adult children with disabilities
Unemployment rates will increase significantly as support workers are no longer funded.
Negative mental health impact on participants and their families and committed carers.
I'm not saying it doesn't need review, I'm saying be very careful what you do because the wrong cuts will kill. Don't listen those in brown cardigans who count money and have never been in the same room with a person with a disability giving advice and making offensive genralisations. Listen to those who live with disabilities or know what that means.
