The delicate skin of the ni***es can easily be damaged by incorrect attachment/poor latch, dried out by soaps or irritated by the fabrics we wear. Previously it was thought that wounds need to be dry to heal, however we know this is not the case, and that moist environments speed up would healing.

Find yourself a good, thick ointment or balm and apply regularly to ni***es - not only will it help heal damaged ones, it will also assist in maintaining the integrity of the delicate skin to prevent it from becoming damaged.

It doesn't have to be any fancy or expensive balm to be effective - as long as it is fatty, oily and thick to pe*****te the layers of skin to provide moisture. Ensure it is safe for ingestion of bub or if it needs to be wiped off prior to a feed.

Breasts can feel hard, painful and swollen in the first few days of breastfeeding known as engorgement. They may also feel like this at times throughout your breastfeeding journey. Reverse pressure softening is a technique that pushes back fluid and pressure from behind the ni**le allowing the breasts to soften and milk flow easier. This technique can be used before feeding and expressing to allow better latch and milk flow.

RSV, influenza and COVID-19 are some common illnesses currently circulating in the community. It is often asked whether mum should continue to breastfeed when she is unwell.

In short, the answer is YES!
There are very few illnesses which can be transferred via a woman’s breastmilk to her child and RSV, influenza, gastroenteritis and (as far as we know) COVID-19 are not one of them. As we know, breastmilk has many amazing properties. When a woman is unwell or comes across an illness and her immune system fights the illness, it produces antibodies.

When a woman is also breastfeeding, these antibodies are transferred from the mother’s system into baby’s system via breastmilk and therefore gives bub immune-fighting antibodies to protect it from illness and infection. This can be either preventing illness or fighting it off so that the illness that manifests is not severe.

In short – when you are sick, your breastmilk PROTECTS your child from becoming unwell.

It’s a tough gig when you are unwell and caring for a child and breastfeeding. Some important things to remember are; to seek medical assistance early, keep well hydrated to avoid dehydration and keep up breastmilk supply and rest when you can (I know.. easier said than done!). Washing hands regularly after coughing, sneezing, blowing nose or going to the bathroom is vital in any case to reduce the spread of illness. Wearing a mask and avoiding kissing your baby can help prevent the spread of illnesses via saliva and droplets.

If you feel you are too unwell to breastfeed due to the energy is uses, it is okay to try expressing and feeding your baby with a bottle. It is also okay to use formula if required. A word of warning however, when unwell there can be a slight drop in breastmilk supply, usually due to dehydration. It would be best to try boosting supply eg pumping after feeds etc before trialing other methods of feeding, and if using formula to express in place of those feeds if wanting to maintain your breastmilk supply.

Finding the right bra when nursing can certainly be a challenge. Here are some tips for things to look for..

A bra that fits well will give you the most support and comfort to accommodate for changes in breast size in between feeds. A bra that is too tight, or has underwire can put pressure on the ni***es and breast tissue and lead to tender areas, tender ni***es and blocked ducts. Having a professional fitting or trialing different sizes can help ensure you get the best fit.

Ensure the bra is made of a fabric that does stick to your ni***es as this contributes to damage of the ni**le when separating the fabric off the fragile skin that may be somewhat sticky due to breastmilk or ni**le balms. Similarly, rough fabrics or fabrics that rub against the ni***es create damage through friction, so try to avoid these if possible.

There are many new bras on the market that absorb breastmilk removing the need for breastpads - ensure these wick moisture and don't leave the bra feeling wet.

Lastly, ensure it is easy to get the bra on and off, as well as accessibility for feeding.

It's important to care for your ni***es when lactating even if you are not experiencing ni**le pain. We want to keep the ni***es in optimal condition to avoid damage to the ni**le.

One of the first steps is related to showering and bathing. The breasts don't necessarily need to be cleaned with soap and so plain old water is more than enough to clean the breasts. Algernatively, it is recommended to use a mild soap or a soap free wash. The reason for these options over standard soaps and body washes is that they contain fewer harmful products that can lead to drying out of the ni**le, which would make them more prone to injury, cracks, infection.

Let us know your fave soap-free washes below!

The first few days of breastfeeding is the most common time where women experience sore, damaged ni***es. The most common cause is poor latch or attachment at the breast and this is because it is all completely new for a baby who has just entered the world - they are learning, but they are quick learners.

In those first few days, ni**le pain is the most common reason women cease breastfeeding.

I have recently been reminded of the ni**le pain in the first few days and thought I would do a post on ni**le first aid to help get you through those days where the nips are incredibly tender.

Always check attachment at the breast as poor attachment is the most common cause of ni**le pain. Seek assistance from a LC/GP. Whilst awaiting assistance and checking latch, it is important to keep the ni***es clean and well nourished by applying a fatty ni**le balm (or breastmilk) to them after every feed and ensure to frequently change breast pads/bras.

Apply a cool or warm compress to the breast helps soothe the ni***es afger feeds. Some women prefer cool, others prefer warm. I personally prefer cool (either wet facewasher, frozen nappies or a breast cool pack thwt has been in the freezer) applied to the breasts to help with reducing pain and inflammation in the first few days - Try both warm/cool and see which feels best for you.

If there are ANY concerns about the health of your ni***es, seek assistance EARLY so that you can get the right information to get you back on track to continue your lactation journey nip pain free!
