When Chef Rene Horton began her career, she never aspired to work in the aged care industry but now, after an 10 years of working at Royal Freemasons' Centennial Lodge home, she wouldn’t dream of doing anything else.

Growing up in South Africa, Rene always knew that she wanted to become a chef because it was so much part of her family culture. “I grew up in a house where we were always baking, pickling things, making chutney, and cooking roasts,” she says. “So, it was just part of growing up. I always loved cooking. I tried a few other different things before I became a chef, but I would always come back to it; it was something that was just part of me.”

Rene is deeply passionate about creating a satisfying food experience for residents. While most of her time is spent in the kitchen, she relishes the opportunity to meet residents from across the home so she can grasp what they love to eat.

“At lunch times I normally like to go out and have a chat with the residents. I do have an admin day every second week and that is another time when I try to get around the home and talk to people, do surveys and find out what they like to eat.

“I love meeting all the residents, people from all different walks of life, people from India and China. They come with all these different stories, and I love cooking dishes that are familiar to them.”

Each seasonal menu is formulated with feedback from these interactions, the food focus group attended by residents and their representatives, as well as input from other chef managers, the executive and a dietician. Different tastes, dietary requirements and texture levels all need to be catered for to create meals that are nutritional, varied, tasty and appealing to the eye.

While drafting the menu is a complex process, at the end of the day, Rene is passionate about cooking food that is well-loved by residents. “I’m aiming for comfort when I cook. People feel comforted by food that they have grown up with, that they’re familiar with,” says Rene.

“I had a resident who said, ‘I’m never going to have the congee I had when I was growing up.’ And I said ‘Well, give me the recipe and I can try making it.’ She absolutely loved it and her daughter used to bring it in every day from a restaurant but eventually she said, ‘Please don’t bring the one from the restaurant because I love the one that is being made here.’ So, that sort of thing is wonderful.”

Clinical Care Coordinator and registered nurse, Nipuni has been working at our Elizabeth Gardens community — a place she calls home — for an impressive 21 years and considers herself privileged to have cared for so many people in that time.

“It’s special to be an aged care nurse and it’s very rewarding. You stay because you love it,” Nipuni says.

Nipuni always knew that she wanted to become nurse — she comes from a long line of them and has always had a heart to help people.

“I’ve always liked to help people and had a passion for providing them with good care. My mother was a nurse, and my grandmother was a nurse, so it runs through my blood. I like to see that people are happy and cared for.”

While Nipuni provides excellent clinical care, she is particularly passionate about caring for the whole person and values the relationships of trust she has built with the residents that make them feel at home.

“I love providing holistic care to our residents,” she says. “As a nurse I deal with their clinical issues, but my happiness is about making their life comfortable and making sure they feel valued.”

“When I started here when I was younger, I thought, this in an area where I can make a difference in people’s lives and make them smile.”

While Nipuni highly recommends aged care nursing, she says you need to have certain qualities and skills to succeed in the role.

“You have to have lots of patience and empathy and understand that every resident is different and provide care according to their particular needs”, she says. “Teamwork and good communication skills are also very important because you are dealing with lots of different people in order to provide that personalised care, such as families, allied health, doctors and personal carers.”

In her 21 years as a nurse at Royal Freemasons, Nipuni says making residents happy has always been the highlight.

“To see the residents smile — that’s my ultimate goal,“ she says. “I want them to feel that coming into aged care is not a sad place. I want them to feel that it’s a transition from home to home.”

Resilience and determination 🧡

These two words perfectly describe Robbie O’Brien, a resident at our Centennial Lodge community in Wantirna South.

Born with cerebral palsy, Robbie’s fighting spirit and desire for independence has driven him to advocate for life-changing modifications for people with disabilities.

But while his advocacy work is inspiring, Robbie’s proudest moment was marrying Jeanie — the love of his life. 🧡

Residents at our Elizabeth Gardens home in Burwood had a wonderful time this week rejuvenating their raised garden beds, with the help of Jordan and Imo from Bunnings Warehouse Australia! 🌿

The beds are now topped up with fresh soil, veggie seedlings and climbing plants. Residents also planted a herb garden in the courtyard, which the chef will use to add even more freshness and flavour to their meals.

The garden is an important part of the Elizabeth Gardens community, with residents regularly spending time there enjoying the fresh air and greenery. As resident Ken says, “I always come and sit here around the plants, and they make me very happy.”

We’re incredibly grateful to Box Hill Bunnings for their generous donation of soil, plants, a beautiful bird bath, hoses and their time. Our residents loved bringing it all together. 💚

🧡 Connecting generations 🧡

Residents from our Mount Martha Valley home in Safety Beach were delighted to recently pay a visit to Green Leaves Early Learning Rosebud.

Young and old came together for a morning of fun with residents reading to the children, playing puppet games and sharing plenty of smiles.

Intergenerational activities like this are an important part of our wellbeing program at Royal Freemasons. Residents especially love the playful and uplifting energy the children give.

At Royal Freemasons, our lifestyle staff are all about encouraging hobbies and pastimes among residents, and at our Monash Gardens home in Mulgrave, resident John loves to spend hours constructing Lego models.

John has been building Lego since he was 12 years old and has a whole collection of his creations. He has just finished constructing a 2000-piece Concorde plane and is about to start a Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

“I love the concentration of building them,” says John. “Lego is so exacting and every piece fits — it’s amazing!”

This Valentine’s Day, you won’t meet a couple more in love than Glennys and Jack. 🧡

Glennys, a resident at our Centennial Lodge home in Wantirna South, met Jack through family connections and the couple have been together for 30 wonderful years.

“We love each other. I’m a lucky girl,” says Glennys.

The couple spent many years enjoying trips to their farm in Dunolly, tending their beautiful garden and enjoying many a get together with family and friends.

These days their time together is different — but all the more precious — since Glennys suffered a stroke and lost the ability to walk.

Jack is utterly devoted to Glennys, visiting her at least twice a day, seven days a week to help her with her meals and be by her side.

“His visits mean everything to me,” says Glennys.

They credit a strong friendship as the secret to their long-lasting relationship and are looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day at Centennial Lodge’s special afternoon tea!

🧡 “I just love my volunteer work. I love connecting with the residents.”

Brenda has been volunteering at our Monash Gardens Residential Aged Care community for an impressive 10 years and, like all our volunteers, is a vital part of the Royal Freemasons family.

From helping with Trivia and Bingo to joining residents on bus trips, Brenda started volunteering with a simple goal: to contribute to her local community.

“All I had to offer was my time. I wanted to do something and give back in some way.”

Monash Gardens Lifestyle Coordinator, Trish, says, “Brenda is a gem. She is so generous with her time and is so much part of our community. I say to all our volunteers that they have to leave with a smile, knowing that they’ve made someone’s day, and Brenda does that — she really enjoys making a difference.”

Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🧡🙏

We are deeply grateful to those of you who donated to our Christmas Gift Appeal — thank you for showing how much you care for our residents who are without families or loved ones.

Because of your generosity, more than 80 people in our care were delighted to receive generous gifts last Christmas.

As soon as donations closed for the appeal, our Lifestyle staff got busy shopping for just the right present for each person. Among the thoughtfully chosen gifts were beautiful picture books, watches, jewellery, scarves, hats, and handbags.

Seeing their reactions to their gifts is always a priceless moment — filled with smiles, surprise, delight, and even tears — as they realise they have been thought of in such a special way.

Thank you once again for your compassion and support. Your generosity has brought dignity and happiness to those who needed it most at Christmas.
