There is nothing quite like a new set of clothes to help you feel fresh, renewed and confident. For many of us, it’s something that we may take for granted, but for some of the people in our care, it is a luxury they can no longer afford.

That’s why we are excited to launch our Clothed with Compassion Appeal, raising funds to purchase essential clothing for our residents in need.

Across our seven aged care homes, there are a number of residents with limited financial means and little or no family support to buy them new clothes — but with your help, we can change that.

Your donation will go towards new socks, shirts, jumpers, trousers and coats — everyday clothing that will help them feel rejuvenated and confident.

At Royal Freemasons, we want to ensure that these residents feel supported, connected and part of a compassionate community that cares for their needs.

Will you help us raise $20,000 to purchase new clothes for our residents in need?

This is your chance to support the dignity and wellbeing of these residents by providing them with the comfort and confidence that comes with a new set of clothes.

A big thank you to Naturipe Fruits in Bacchus Marsh for welcoming our residents for a fun afternoon of fruit picking.

Residents from our Springtime community in Sydenham loved being in the fresh air amongst the orchards, picking persimmons to take back home and enjoy.

Experiences like these are such an important part of our wellbeing program at Royal Freemasons, giving residents the opportunity to enjoy the gentle comfort of nature while staying connected to the wider community.

It’s been a joy to celebrate the commitment and dedication of our wonderful volunteers this National Volunteer Week!

At Royal Freemasons, we’re fortunate to have more than 40 volunteers across our Residential Aged Care homes, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we care for.

Our volunteers give their time, friendship, compassion and talents so generously, bringing our residents comfort, joy, fun and laughter every day.

To recognise and thank them for their incredible contribution, we hosted a special high tea in their honour at our Monash Gardens home in Mulgrave, shared with the residents they care for so deeply.

Is this “Your Year to Volunteer”?

Many, many happy returns to Monash Gardens resident, Ken, who celebrated his 100th birthday this week! 🎂🎉

The Lifestyle team put on a magnificent party to mark this incredible milestone, complete with balloons, a cake and live entertainment.

Surrounded by family and friends, Ken thoroughly enjoyed singing along to golden oldies such as ‘Blueberry Hill’ and ‘Sweet Caroline.’

In his 100 years, Ken is especially proud of his 69 years of marriage to his beloved late wife, Jean, and his wonderful family of three children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

We’re so glad you enjoyed the celebrations, Ken! 🧡

Each week during the school term, Year 9 students from Mazenod College walk over to our Monash Gardens home in Mulgrave for a special visit with residents.

These catch-ups are part of the students’ community service program, and residents always look forward to seeing them.

Monash Gardens Lifestyle Coordinator Trish says, “It’s great for the students to experience the banter and fun times at our home. The residents, particularly those who don’t have grandchildren, absolutely love the visits; their eyes just light up. And when they talk to the students, they share their stories and are so interested in what they are doing in their lives.”

Time together is spent playing games like carpet bowls and Scrabble — and things can get very competitive.

“The residents slay them at Scrabble,” Trish laughs. “It’s game on! Sometimes I have to adjudicate.”

“These types of activities are just so important for keeping residents connected with the wider community, and they benefit the students as well. It really is a win-win.”

Retired school teacher, Evie, is delighted to be using her skills in her volunteer role at our Elizabeth Gardens home in Burwood, where she holds art classes for the residents every Tuesday afternoon.

With her mum, Nellie, in care at Elizabeth Gardens, Evie felt compelled to contribute her time and skills for the benefit of other residents. “I had just retired as a school teacher when we put mum into care here and I felt it was important to give back to the community. I also wanted to encourage mum to get involved in activities,” says Evie.

Evie organises a range of creative activities for the residents, including watercolours, creating paper lanterns and weaving activities — easy, engaging activities for all abilities that can be enjoyed by many.

“As a primary school teacher, whatever I used to do with the students is what I do with the residents as well. I create simple and enjoyable activities for them.”

“I just hope they get some enjoyment out of the art classes, and they also get the opportunity to talk to the other residents as well.”

The residents look forward to the chance to get creative each week. As resident Sylvia says: “I love painting. I come to the group every week and look forward to it.”

Evie loves her volunteering work and finds the process of planning the art session and getting to know the residents very rewarding.

“I get a lot of enjoyment from planning the arts and craft sessions for residents. I just find it very rewarding. It’s nice to know that you’re helping people and it’s lovely to get to know them too — many of them have had very interesting lives,” she says.

Because she is at the home most days visiting her mum, Evie also helps with bingo on Wednesdays and anything else the Lifestyle team needs assistance with.

Evie is just one of our army of more than 40 volunteers who work across our Residential Aged Care homes giving support and companionship to those in our care. She has been volunteering at Elizabeth Gardens for three years and would recommend it to anyone.

“I would highly recommend volunteering in aged care. It is rewarding and you get to meet interesting people beyond your own age group who have a lot of interesting stories to tell. It also gives you a sense of purpose and it’s great to give back to the community.”

When Chef Rene Horton began her career, she never aspired to work in the aged care industry but now, after 10 years of working at Royal Freemasons' Centennial Lodge home, she wouldn’t dream of doing anything else.

Growing up in South Africa, Rene always knew that she wanted to become a chef because it was so much part of her family culture. “I grew up in a house where we were always baking, pickling things, making chutney, and cooking roasts,” she says. “So, it was just part of growing up. I always loved cooking. I tried a few other different things before I became a chef, but I would always come back to it; it was something that was just part of me.”

Rene is deeply passionate about creating a satisfying food experience for residents. While most of her time is spent in the kitchen, she relishes the opportunity to meet residents from across the home so she can grasp what they love to eat.

“At lunch times I normally like to go out and have a chat with the residents. I do have an admin day every second week and that is another time when I try to get around the home and talk to people, do surveys and find out what they like to eat.

“I love meeting all the residents, people from all different walks of life, people from India and China. They come with all these different stories, and I love cooking dishes that are familiar to them.”

Each seasonal menu is formulated with feedback from these interactions, the food focus group attended by residents and their representatives, as well as input from other chef managers, the executive and a dietician. Different tastes, dietary requirements and texture levels all need to be catered for to create meals that are nutritional, varied, tasty and appealing to the eye.

While drafting the menu is a complex process, at the end of the day, Rene is passionate about cooking food that is well-loved by residents. “I’m aiming for comfort when I cook. People feel comforted by food that they have grown up with, that they’re familiar with,” says Rene.

“I had a resident who said, ‘I’m never going to have the congee I had when I was growing up.’ And I said ‘Well, give me the recipe and I can try making it.’ She absolutely loved it and her daughter used to bring it in every day from a restaurant but eventually she said, ‘Please don’t bring the one from the restaurant because I love the one that is being made here.’ So, that sort of thing is wonderful.”

Clinical Care Coordinator and registered nurse, Nipuni has been working at our Elizabeth Gardens community — a place she calls home — for an impressive 21 years and considers herself privileged to have cared for so many people in that time.

“It’s special to be an aged care nurse and it’s very rewarding. You stay because you love it,” Nipuni says.

Nipuni always knew that she wanted to become nurse — she comes from a long line of them and has always had a heart to help people.

“I’ve always liked to help people and had a passion for providing them with good care. My mother was a nurse, and my grandmother was a nurse, so it runs through my blood. I like to see that people are happy and cared for.”

While Nipuni provides excellent clinical care, she is particularly passionate about caring for the whole person and values the relationships of trust she has built with the residents that make them feel at home.

“I love providing holistic care to our residents,” she says. “As a nurse I deal with their clinical issues, but my happiness is about making their life comfortable and making sure they feel valued.”

“When I started here when I was younger, I thought, this in an area where I can make a difference in people’s lives and make them smile.”

While Nipuni highly recommends aged care nursing, she says you need to have certain qualities and skills to succeed in the role.

“You have to have lots of patience and empathy and understand that every resident is different and provide care according to their particular needs”, she says. “Teamwork and good communication skills are also very important because you are dealing with lots of different people in order to provide that personalised care, such as families, allied health, doctors and personal carers.”

In her 21 years as a nurse at Royal Freemasons, Nipuni says making residents happy has always been the highlight.

“To see the residents smile — that’s my ultimate goal,“ she says. “I want them to feel that coming into aged care is not a sad place. I want them to feel that it’s a transition from home to home.”
