Music Therapy is an evidence-based allied health profession, using music as a tool to support the wellbeing and health of people across the lifespan and populations. Music Therapists use music to meet participants' diverse needs including developmental, emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual needs. Music Therapy is not music lesson or performance. Participants are not required to have musical backgrounds/training to participate in Music Therapy, in which a safe therapeutic space is provided for them to have unique music experiences based on their preferences. Sessions could look like live/recorded music listening, playing instruments together, improvising music, music and movement, music-assisted relaxation, music sharing, lyrics discussion, song writing, etc., for working towards participants' corresponding therapeutic goals.

Upcoming Online Information Sessions
For Parents & Carers

Anxiety in Children with Learning Difficulties
Presented by Lisa Watts
When: 1pm-2:30pm AEST, Tuesday 16th July
Where: Online

Workshop Overview

Having a learning disability or difficulty can be very challenging. Not only does it affect academic performance, but it can also have a significant and long-lasting effect on a student’s psychological and socioemotional development.

Whilst it is common for children to experience worries and feel anxious at times, it is not surprising that a child with Dyslexia or other learning difficulties may also experience anxiety as they can be faced with frustrating or stressful situations throughout their day at school.

The first step in being able to support someone who is experiencing increased levels of anxiety is being able to understand it. This workshop will look at why anxiety occurs and the signs to be aware of. It will also provide some helpful strategies on how to support children experiencing these challenges.

Cognitive Load and the Science of Learning
Presented by Mandy Nayton

When: 1pm-2:30pm AEST, Tuesday 23rd July
Where: Online

Workshop Overview

This presentation will review the current knowledge we have about how we learn (and remember) new skills and concepts. Mandy will discuss four of the key contributors to successful learning including: attention, error correction, curiosity, and consolidation - and will also provide a brief overview of why some teaching approaches tend to be more successful than others.

What is Dyslexia?
Presented by Brooke McIntyre

When: 1pm-2:30pm AEST, Tuesday 6th August
Where: Online

Workshop Overview

A learning disorder in reading is commonly known as dyslexia and the term has been used for well over 100 years. However, there is often confusion over what it means to have dyslexia, what the features are and what the causes of dyslexia might be. There is also some confusion about how best to support students with dyslexia.

In this informative session, the defining features of dyslexia will be explored and the reasons that some students struggle more than others to learn to read and spell will be discussed. A brief overview of how dyslexia is diagnosed and what we know to be the most effective support strategies will also be provided. An opportunity to ask general questions about dyslexia will be offered at the conclusion of the presentation.
