What is Fascia?
This is something I'm often asked when using Myofascial release techniques.
The answer can be simple, yet it can go deep, like fascia.
Basically fascia is the in between. It's the connective tissue holding everything else in place. If it was counted as a bodily system, it would be the biggest, it is inside all of the other systems.
According to (where I appropriated this image from): ".. researchers have begun to take a fresh look at fascia and are finding that it is anything but an inert wrapping. Instead, it is the site of biological activity that explains some of the links between lifestyle and health. It may even be a new type of sensory organ. “There appears to be more going on in the fascia than is commonly appreciated,” says Karl Lewis..."
My belief is that we store old traumas, injuries and emotions in our fascia, and until they're released our bodies will remain in discomfort, holding the body in the old patterns.
This is why I like to start every treatment with a Myofascial release, to invite the body to let go of the old stuff and move forward. It helps the muscles to truly heal.
