I recently completed a continuous professional development (CPD) update on lipoedema through Ausmed, reviewing current Australian guidance for health professionals.

Reassuringly, I didn’t learn anything new - so I’m confident that I’m as well-informed as possible without official certification (which is on the cards for later this year).

The key themes remain consistent:
• Lipoedema is a chronic, progressive condition
• Early recognition matters
• Conservative, long-term management plays an important role
• Many people live for years without diagnosis or support

In a field where information can be confusing or inconsistent, I’m very intentional about staying aligned with evidence-based guidance.

Continuing CPD means I can make sure the care I provide remains informed, current and grounded in best practice.

In this exciting study, scientists developed a lab-grown lymphatic tissue that could help repair the lymphatic system after it has been damaged by surgery, particularly in people who develop secondary lymphoedema after lymph-node removal, such as during cancer treatment.

The researchers used a relatively simple centrifuge-based technique to create a three-dimensional piece of tissue made from lymphatic vessel cells combined with supportive stromal cells. The aim was to mimic the structure and function of natural lymphatic tissue.

When this engineered tissue was transplanted into mice that had lymph nodes surgically removed, it survived long-term and connected with the existing lymphatic system. Importantly, it helped restore lymphatic flow, something that current treatments are unable to do. The only current treatments are conservative management or lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) aka lymphovenous ‘bypass’ where lymphatic vessels are rerouted to nearby veins.

In this new study, the transplanted tissue also formed structures that behaved like lymph nodes and was more effective at reducing swelling than standard approaches such as compression alone. This suggests it was doing more than just providing support - it was actively participating in lymphatic function!

In simple terms, the researchers created a bioengineered lymphatic “replacement” that helped rebuild parts of the lymphatic system and improve fluid drainage.

While the research is still at an early stage, it’s an exciting and promising step toward treatments that aim to restore lymphatic function rather than only managing symptoms.
