๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’› As the sun sets in Australia on International Day of People with disABILITY we wanted to pause one more time to draw attention to people with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and their unmet needs.

Our families tell us they often hear "he'll grow out of it" or "you just need to read to them more often". This simplistic and inaccurate understanding of the impact of DLD across the lifespan is not helpful and needs to be addressed. Let's look at the evidence provided by researchers from around the world and compiled by RADLD - Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder shall we:

๐ŸŸฃ DLD affects 7.5% of grade 1 children. Teachers, need to know about DLD, because there are two students with DLD in every classroom. In a class of 30, 2 children have DLD. ๐™‰๐™ค๐™ง๐™—๐™ช๐™ง๐™ฎ ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ก., 2016

๐Ÿ”ต DLD is 50 times more prevalent than hearing impairment and 5 times more prevalent than autism. ๐™ˆ๐™˜๐™‚๐™ง๐™š๐™œ๐™ค๐™ง., 2020 - ๐™™๐™ก๐™™๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™๐™ข๐™š.๐™ค๐™ง๐™œ

๐ŸŸก People with DLD are 6 times more likely to have reading difficulties and 4 times more likely to struggle with math. ๐™”๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ก., 2002

๐Ÿ”ด DLD commonly co-occurs with other neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD, Developmental Coordination Disorder, dyslexia, and dyscalculia. ๐˜พ๐™ก๐™š๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ฃ & ๐™†๐™ž๐™ง๐™—๐™ฎ, 2018

๐ŸŸฃ 4 out of 5 children with identified emotional and behavioural problems may have unidentified DLD. ๐™ƒ๐™ค๐™ก๐™ก๐™ค ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ก., 2014; ๐˜ฝ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ง ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ก., 200

๐Ÿ”ต DLD is unidentified in many affected children. Children with DLD often do not receive specialised services to address the condition. ๐™๐™ค๐™ข๐™—๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ก., 1997; ๐™‰๐™ค๐™ง๐™—๐™ช๐™ง๐™ฎ ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ก., 2016

๐ŸŸก DLD is a persistent problem, but it may look different at different ages requiring different assessment tools sensitive to ongoing challenges. The core deficits in DLD change over the lifespan. Children do not grow out of DLD. They need support. ๐˜พ๐™๐™–๐™ง๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ก., 2019; ๐˜ฟ๐™š๐™ก ๐™๐™ช๐™›๐™ค & ๐™Ž๐™–๐™ฎ๐™–๐™ ๐™ค ๐™€๐™–๐™ง๐™ก๐™š, 2020

๐Ÿ”ด People with DLD can succeed despite their language difficulties. Adults with DLD can achieve positive educational and employment outcomes. ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™ž-๐™๐™–๐™ข๐™จ๐™™๐™š๐™ฃ ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ก., 2017

We hope people's views will change towards DLD when they are confronted by the facts of this hidden disABILITY.

Early intervention...

We talk about it a lot, I could give you so many reasons why itโ€™s great for kids!!!

But one in particular we forget is reducing carer burnout!

Donโ€™t get me wrong attending multiple therapy sessions a week is beyond exhausting for parents.
But not getting in early can make it worse!

One of the key ingredients of early intervention is parents!! We always see better results when parents are part of the treating team, learning and working with the child and therapist.

Supporting a parent to help a child regulate is a lot more successful if the parent themselves are regulated.

Whatโ€™s not so helpful is leaving a parent struggling to support a child for months or years with no support, no intervention and no personalised strategies.

When all they have to turn to is the often judgemental and inaccurate deep dark corners of the internet guilt, fear, distress and exhaustion all grow!!

But if we can help parents right at the beginning we can give them tools, strategies, support and reassurance, we can start seeing improvements before it gets completely overwhelming.

Leave it too late and we are left asking an exhausted, overwhelmed and scared parent to try to learn and implement new strategies, techniques and routines.

So next time someone expresses concerns about their childโ€™s development, donโ€™t just spout the old โ€˜they all do it in their own timeโ€™ listen, validate their concerns, parents instincts are often very right!
Encourage them to seek assistance from health professionals early no matter how small the concern.
Sometimes a handful of appointments early can prevent many many appointments later.
Sometimes early intervention gets kids and families the diagnosis and support they need!

At worst things are ticking along just fine they get professional reassurance they are doing ok!!!

Amazing news! Letโ€™s hope this results in evidence-based instruction being available for every Victorian student that needs it ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Victoria's called 'The Education State' for a reason.

We want kids to have the very best start in life โ€“ no matter where they live.

And to receive an education that matches their needs and supports them โ€“ no matter their background.

That's what makes today so special.

Nearly $1.6 billion to completely transform the way students with disabilities receive support at school.

We know that in the past, some kids who've needed extra help just haven't been eligible.

That's made things tough at school, and tough for families. And far too many have fallen through the cracks.

So we're expanding the criteria and doubling the number of students who'll receive targeted support in the classroom โ€“ including kids with autism, dyslexia or complex behaviours.

We'll employ specialist facilitators to help identify students' individual circumstances and needs.

This new approach will focus on what a student can achieve in the classroom - rather than what they can't.

It means kids will be given more opportunity to work to their strengths, in areas that interest them.

And to help schools better plan and adjust support for students, we're investing in staff and skills too.

81 additional teacher roles in specialist schools. 25 coaches and new learning resources to support teachers. And 150 scholarships for existing staff to build on their skills and experience.

This investment is the biggest in our state's history. And unlike anything else in the Southern Hemisphere.

It marks a complete reform in how a student's needs will be identified, and how those needs will be met in the classroom.

More kids will get the help they need โ€“ and a fairer future.

Because that's exactly what they deserve.

Fantastic information regarding decodable readers for upper primary/high schoolers from the amazing Amanda Kranz!

In my role as a specialist teacher and Director of The Dyslexia Hub, I work predominantly with upper-primary and secondary-aged students. This is partly by choice (I was a secondary school teacher for many years), but also because this is where the demand is. The vast majority of enquiries to our se...

A follow up from yesterday's post! It's no coincidence I receive lots of requests for Grade 4 or 5 students that are suddenly struggling to read and spell.

As you can see, the number of multisyllabic words that students encounter each year is enormous! Students need an effective way to be able to decode words with 2+ syllables.

Without a method to attach multisyllabic words, what chance do students have at successfully reading grade level text and beyond?

Breaking words into syllables is such an important skill for reading and spelling. Thanks to Learning Matters Ltd for this wonderful poster explaining the basics of syllable types!

As Dr Guinevere Eden says .... "Something that many of us take for granted and forget, is just how complicated reading is. There's nothing about our brain that was designed to learn to read...... Reading uses different parts of the brain to sound out words, recognise familiar words by sight, think about how to pronounce the words."

As teachers and specialists it is not only crucial we know this, but that we understand how our alphabetic code works and how we can explicitly teach both word recognition skills and language comprehension.

This Syllable Types poster is a firm favourite (reminder and teaching prompt) to have on the wall in your classroom, staffroom, office room, bedroom haha. Ok I may have taken that a bit far :)

The Syllable Types poster gives very clear explanations for each of the 7 Syllable types.

Developing the knowledge that syllables are parts of words and every syllable contain vowels helps children to successfully grasp an understanding of the English language.

This poster breaks down the syllable types with a brief explanation and word examples.
Syllable types, and the rules within them, are most successfully taught using a well scaffolded, cumulative approach to spelling.
