Pet of the Week: Pepi đŸ±

Meet Pepi, the 12-week-old domestic short hair who is confident, curious and full of charm!

After a playful mishap with the family rabbit just before Christmas, Pepi had surgery with our team and returned this week for a post-op check. Healed, happy, and full of character,

Pepi spent his visit exploring our cat waiting area and making himself completely at home. See you soon for your 16-week vaccinations, Pepi 💙

The weather is warming up in Melbourne, with the forecast predicting temperatures in the 30s and 40s this week alone. With this in mind, we know our pets are likely to be feeling the heat!

To prevent our furry companions from getting heatstroke, it’s important to know which signs and symptoms to look out for.

If you’re unsure, call us on (03) 9000 9828. Stay cool and stay safe!

This post contains 5 slides. The opening slide has a navy-blue background with a triangle warning symbol, and it is titled “Heatstroke. Extreme heat forecast across Melbourne. Know the signs, symptoms, and prevention”.
Slide 2: Shows a close-up picture of a brown greyhound’s face, with its pink tongue sticking out. There is text on navy blue square that says “Physical symptoms: excessive panting, drooling, vomiting/diarrhea, and weakness”.
Slide 3: Shows a picture of a brown chihuahua, with its head turned to the left, sticking its long tongue out. There is text on navy blue square that says “Behaviour Changes: seeking shade or cool surfaces, increased agitation, lethargy / not wanting to play, change in appetite, and disorientation “.
Slide 4: Shows a picture of a brown labrador, sitting on a ‘water patterned’ cooling mat. There is text on navy blue square that says “Prevention is Key: skip walks in hot weather, limit sun and outdoor exposure, provide a cool resting space (think: cooling mats), offer water in small amounts, and towel them down with cool water (not cold water).
The final slide has a navy-blue background with a triangle warning symbol, and it says: acting quickly can save a life. If you’re unsure, call us on (03) 9000 9828. Stay cool and keep your pets safe”.

The New Year often means new fireworks, and we know that our pets need extra care during this time. A quiet safe-space, time indoors, calming distractions, and vet-approved calming aids can help ease their stress.

From the team at Tooronga Veterinary Hospital, we are wishing you and your pets a safe and happy start to the New Year. đŸ¶đŸ±

This post depicts a colourful display of nighttime fireworks on a blue background, with an overlaying title that says: “keeping your pets safe this fireworks season”.

There is a dot-point list of tips including:
1. Create a Safe Space: Make a quiet, comfortable spot in your home where your pets can hide and feel safe
2. Keep Them Indoors: Keep pets indoors to reduce exposure to loud noises and bright lights. Also avoids outdoor dogs jumping fences
3. Provide Distractions: Use toys, treats, or calming music to distract your pets from the noise
4. Use Calming Aids: Consider using thunder coats, pheromone diffusers, or chatting to your vet about medication to help soothe anxiety
These steps can help reduce anxiety and ensure the safety of your pets during fireworks.

Day 7 - Finding the paw-fect pressies for our pets

We know there are gifts under the tree for Milo and Luna — we have them for ours too! Pets are family
 sometimes even the favourites 😉

While our pets may be expert toy testers, they’re not always great at spotting risky choices. This Christmas, our top vet concerns are rawhide treats and poorly sized toys, which can cause choking or digestive issues, especially for keen chewers.

When choosing Muffin’s new toys for 2026, pick options suited to their size, age, and chewing style. Vet-approved dental chews are a safe, fun choice that also support oral health.

If you’d like to grab Oravet chews before gift-giving day, just let us know!

Holiday gatherings while delightful, can often be overwhelming for our pets. New people, increased noise, and constant activity may cause stress, even in more confident and social animals.

Providing our pets with a quiet space to retreat to, free from pressure to interact, can help  them feel safe and relaxed. Use of pheromone products may also support calm behaviour during busy days.

For more information, or other tips and tricks to help your pet navigate their feelings, please reach out to the team!

🎄 Day 5 - It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas 🎄

To some imaginative pets, Christmas trees can look less like the pinnacle of Christmas home decor, and more like The World’s Most Delightful and Giant Toy.

Unfortunately for them, looks can be deceiving in this regard! Pine needles can cause severe irritation to our pets’ mouths and stomachs, and Christmas tree water might even contain chemicals that aren’t safe to be lapped up! Tinsel and lighting might present as a unique climbing challenge to some cats, however we would suggest positive redirection to their own climbing trees, scratching posts, wherever you can!

To keep your pet (and Christmas tree!) safe this we recommend securing the tree at its base, keeping fragile ornaments out of reach, and supervising any curious pets around the tree - especially cats and puppies!

🎄 The team has loved watching photos come through of your pets with your Christmas tree at home – keep sending them through, and don’t forget to tag
