Kicking the sugar habit is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your health and your mood. The blood sugar rollercoaster that sugar takes you on serves no-one.

Being addicted to sugar and flour is not an emotional eating disorder. It’s a biological disorder, driven by hormones and neurotransmitters that fuel sugar and carb cravings — leading to uncontrolled overeating. This is not a limited phenomenon.

It’s the reason nearly 70 percent of Americans and 40 percent of kids are overweight.

By now you know that sugar isn’t just empty calories — it’s addictive, toxic and the biggest cause of chronic disease.

A little is ok but not in the massive quantities, about half a pound per day consumed by most American.

Think of sugar as a recreational treat. Something to use occasionally but in small amounts. I mean, I like red wine but I don’t drink it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

How about zero calorie sweeteners? No calories, no problem? Well, turns out artificial sweeteners trick the brain and destroy your gut flora all leading to weight gain and type 2 diabetes.

If you plan on cutting down on sugar some things that may help is:
- Eat real food.
- Eat a nutritious breakfast.
- Reduce stress with meditation, deep breathing, etc.
- Exercise daily.
- Check for food intolerances.
- Get good quality sleep.
- Implement crave- cutting supplements.

This is why I take the time to soak and sprout nuts. Yes it takes longer and you need to be organised, by but if you have a compromised gut it is well worth it.

At the NTA, we teach the importance of soaking and sprouting nuts, seeds, grains and legumes. Why is this important? These foods contain anti-nutrients. ⁣

Anti-nutrients include phytic acid, lectins, and other enzyme inhibitors that protect seeds from premature germination and ward off predators. For example, phytic acid binds to the phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc in the intestinal tract, which prevents their absorption and can contribute to mineral deficiencies, bone loss, irritable bowel syndrome, and even neurological damage. The detrimental effects of consuming these anti-nutrients have led many people to the conclusion that eliminating these plant-based foods from the diet is the best pathway to optimal health.⁣

But we know these foods can still be enjoyed as part of a nutrient-dense diet (if tolerated) by using the traditional method of soaking, sprouting, and fermenting. This process actually neutralizes most anti-nutrients, increasing the bioavailability of beneficial nutrients, and improving digestibility by pre-digesting complex starches and activating phytase, which is an enzyme that breaks down the anti-nutritient phytic acid.⁣

It’s 13 or so degrees in Melbourne today, but the rain has stopped and the sun has come out. So I’m out for a walk, making the most of the sunshine, fresh air and open space.

I’m really thankful to live near the beach and open space. Taking a walk is such a simple act of self care that helps keep me grounded and appreciating what I’ve got.

How do you appreciate the simple things in life?

Changing track a bit this week...movement! So many of us sit in chairs for most of the day. Not everyone is a gym ju**ie either. If you're looking for ways to get active that don't invovle a gym or weights machine, check out https://www.primalplay.com/ I had the pleasure of attending one of Daryl's workshops a few years ago, and it's changed the way I look at a park, and even cars! (haha, we each pushed a car across the car park)
