The Five Elements

The Five Elements are inseparable factors of Yin and Yang. They are talked about in unison in the Chinese philosophy - Yin and Yang and Five Elements.

These theories, with the pure materialist ideas of classical Chinese, were the way of recognising nature as they came. They tried to understand the nature within the Yin and Yang theory by grouping the matters into the tree (wood), water, fire, metal, and earth (soil). They researched their relationship to one another, their formation and effects. As a result, the strong theory and the work principles that used around the world today came to exist.

The phrase Five Elements is a means of classifying the nature of various entities - be they material objects, people, emotions, natural or observed phenomena - into one of five groups. Each group has a specific nature. Certain inferences can be drawn by knowing the Five Element nature of say a person.

The Five Element Theory does not imply that everything in the universe is made of the five elements. In times gone by there was a belief (in Europe, not in China) that everything in the universe was made by a combination of some or all of fire, water, earth and air. Some English-speaking practitioners prefer the term Five Phases.
The Five Elements and the Relationship with Our Organs

Within the framework of the Five Element theory There is a complex interplay between the organs. Each organ generates Qi for the following in cycle. On one hand the organs support each other, and on the other hand they control and regulate each other. Thus, is shown how all the organs are interrelated. TCM believed this fitted in with the law of nature as human beings are part of nature. For thousands of years, the human body was researched in this way by TCM masters. They learnt, for example, which organs need ‘water’ or not, which organs need to be rid of ‘humidity’, or which are prone to ‘fire’. This way helped them decide how to protect and treat their patients. These methods of prevention and treatment generally change with the improvements in treatment.

The Movement of Qi
The four directions of Qi movement are up, down, outward, and inward. These movements are so important that once Qi can no longer travel in these directions, life will end.
Each organ has different specialized movements. For example, spleen Qi ascends the pure part of digested food from the stomach for transformation into nutritional essence. Stomach Chi, on the other hand, pushes food downwards in order to remove its impurities. Some organs, like the lungs, perform movements in all four directions. Lung Qi moves in and out during breathing.
The different movements of Qi work in a coordinated manner to maintain a harmonious balance. The ascending balances the descending movement while the outward balances the inward movement. Balanced movement is important for promoting the physiological functions of different tissues, organs, and meridians. The disharmonious movement of Qi leads to health problems. For example, an insufficient downward movement of lung Qi causes a cough. When stomach Qi cannot descend, nausea and vomiting occur.

Original (inborn, Vital) Energy (Yuan Qi)
We can also call this the root energy and the life force; it is the most important energy in human life. It is the energy we bring with us as we are born from our mother’s womb. This main energy source is stored in our kidneys. It feeds our internal organs to function and makes us dynamic.

Pectoral Energy (Zong Qi)
Zong Qi is provided by nature by breathing. It is believed to come from cosmic sourced energy. Also named as the big energy, it creates a pushing force in the breathing function. Zong Qi affects speech, tone of voice, strength of our breath, and sense of smell. Its push force affects the heartbeat and rhythm and body temperature. Oxygen is its base, it can be strengthened by breathing correctly and through breathing exercises.

Nutritive energy (Ying Qi)
This energy supplies nourishment to the body. It comes from food and becomes stronger through good nourishment. It mainly circulates through the blood vessels with the blood. Nutritive Qi has yin properties so it can form into materials needed by other parts of the body. For example, its close relationship with blood allows it to provide some of the necessary substances needed to produce new blood. Ying Qi controls organ functions. It helps with the brain, hand and foot movements. Ying Qi moves all the nutrition to the organs, but the organs can only take the matter at the time allocated, and not when they need it.

Wei Qi
It relates to protection and defence of the body. It takes its power from grains. Wei Qi moves outward from the body to repel invasive pathogens. Strength of the bones, hair and skin indicates that the Wei energy is strong. If the Yang energy is sufficient then the Wei energy will be strong, and the pores will be open. In this case, the energy exchange is easier, and the energy is used more effectively. If the Yin energy is more than the normal level, the Wei energy will fall, and the pores will close. In this case, the body’s defence will become weaker, the hair will look weak and will fall out. The skin will look dull. This energy protects us from cold and heat.

Types of Qi
Original (inborn, Vital) Energy
We can also call this the root energy and the life force; it is the most important energy in human life. It is the energy we bring with us as we are born from our mother’s womb. This main energy source is hidden in our kidneys. It feeds our internal organs to function and makes us dynamic. After birth, its continuous power is supported by water, food, breathing, sun, nature and various other energy sources. It is read as ‘Yuan Qi’ in Chinese.

Pectoral Energy
This is the breath and it is believed to have come from cosmic sourced energy. It is provided by breathing from nature.
This is known as the breath and is believed to come from cosmic sourced energy. It is also named the big energy. It creates a push force in the breathing function. The Zong energy affects speech, tone of voice, the strength of our breath, and sense of smell. Its push force affects the heartbeat and rhythm and body temperature. Oxygen is its base; it can be strengthened by breathing correctly and through breathing exercises. Pectoral energy is hidden in our lungs.

Nutritive energy
We can relate the word ‘Ying’ to nutrition and food. This energy supplies nourishment to the body. It comes from food and becomes stronger through good nourishment. It mainly circulates through the blood vessels with the blood. Nutritive Chi has yin properties so it can form into materials needed by other parts of the body. For example, its close relationship with blood allows it to provide some of the necessary substances needed to produce new blood.

Ying energy controls organ functions. It helps with the brain, hand and foot movements. If we think of the blood as storage, Ying energy moves all the nutrition to the organs. We can think of this as a metabolic process.

Wei Energy (Defensive Energy)
The meaning of the word ‘Wei’ is to protect. It relates to protection and defence of the body. It takes its power from grains. Strength of the bones, hair and skin indicates that the Wei energy is strong.
