There are many teachers of Reiki today—each holding a thread, weaving it into their own tapestry of understanding. All over the world, we continue to ask: Who was Mikao Usui, really? What did he experience on Mount Kurama? What was the essence of his awakening?

Some seek answers in historical records. Others connect the dots through intuition, lineage, and personal practice. Each perspective offers something meaningful, something that resonates. Yet the question remains—will we ever truly know?

And perhaps more importantly—do we need to know?

Usui’s teaching points us toward something deeply human and universally needed: the practice of kindness to all living beings.

We have a body that holds this essence of compassion—a body that breathes, feels, and remembers. Through our hands, our presence, our practice, we return again and again to this truth.

Maybe the real mystery is not who Usui was, but who we are becoming through this path.
Learning. Relearning. Returning to the heart of Reiki.

When I am angry or scared, I go back to my breath and breathe deeply. I do not think anymore, I do not look anymore. I just bring my attention to my breathing, in and out. I breathe deeply, and I calm myself. It always helps me. Every time I have an upset stomach, a feeling of unhappiness in my belly, I use a hot water bottle. And five minutes later, I feel much better. The same is true with mindful breathing. Every time we have anger or fear, if we know how to breathe, we apply our mindful breathing to that fear, to that anger. We embrace our fear and anger with the energy of mindful breathing. We get relief. It always works.

In the busyness of daily life, we can easily become stuck in “survival mode” often rushing, thinking, and doing.

Please take a moment to pause today.
Sit quietly and notice a few gentle in and out breaths.
Nothing to fix. Nothing to achieve.
Just allowing yourself to be fully present.

Sometimes a small pause is enough to reconnect with peace within.

Over the years, I’ve been happy to see many people exploring Reiki, attending Reiki shares, and finding connection and healing in different communities and traditions. There are many beautiful spiritual paths, and each person must follow what resonates deeply for them.

Recently, some students and friends have shared confusion with me around teachers who describe their teachings as “traditional Japanese Reiki” while also teaching manifestation practices, tarot, crystals, psychic development and other modalities as part of Reiki itself.

Whilst I deeply respect these practices and the people who teach them, it is important to gently clarify that these were not teachings of Mikao Usui within the original Japanese Reiki system.

Usui Sensei’s teachings were simple and profound:
cultivating inner peace, compassion, gratitude, meditation, self-reflection, and living the Reiki precepts in daily life. Reiki was not taught as a path of gaining power, manifesting outcomes, or adding spiritual identity, but rather as a way of returning to simplicity, balance and harmony with life itself.

Of course, teachers are free to integrate other modalities into their own offerings, and many do so with sincerity and good intention. Perhaps the important thing is simply clarity, so students can understand what belongs to the traditional Reiki teachings and what has been added from other spiritual paths.

There is room for many approaches in this world. At Heart of Reiki, I continue to honour and share Reiki as a gentle spiritual practice and healing art rooted in the teachings and philosophy passed down from Japan.

With gratitude to all teachers and practitioners walking their own path with sincerity.

Grateful to be back in Japan soon 🙏

Placing hands during a Reiki session is like allowing muddy water to settle. The more we rest in gentle silence, the more clarity naturally appears.Without force, without striving, harmony begins to reveal itself.

In the stillness, the heart remembers its true nature.
