Nicola recently attended an Advanced Social Thinking professional development course at the State Library of Victoria! Here is what she had to say about it:

“It was so great to be amongst a range of professionals all working in the paediatric social skills space. Everyone brought their own perspective which is so valuable and insightful. I also loved hearing from Michelle Garcia-Winner and Pamela Crooke who are both 2 big names in the Social Thinking space. It was wonderful to hear about some of the developments they have been making and how these fit into my day-to-day practice. I can’t wait to use my newfound knowledge when working with my clients on their social skills!"

EMOTIONAL REGULATION GLITTER JARS ✨🫙

The concept of emotional regulation and regulating our bodies is something we are constantly talking about in OT. We love using glitter jars to help explain this in a visual way. It is also a nice way for kids to explain when they are feeling dysregulated as they can describe this as their “glitter swirling around”. The visual effect of the jars is also relaxing in itself which a lot of kids benefit from in the moment.

The jars are simple to make. You will need:
Clear glue (the more you use, the slower the glitter will fall)
Water
Glitter
A jar

Cube Nets can be a great way to turn tasks into games! Play is such a great way to engage kids, if you find yourself in conflict with your kids about day to day tasks, consider how to inject more playfulness into your interactions, this leads to increased connection and thus cooperation.

You can put anything on each side, from the zones of regulation colours, to chores that need to be completed to movement break ideas. Just print out a Cube Net, and place ideas on each side, tape it together and voila! You can laminate them for better durability if available. Check out some ideas below!
