What Makes a "Good OT"?

This is a questions we asked ourselves during our recent team meeting. By reflecting on what skills, qualities and supports we consider integral to our profession, we remind ourselves of why we became OTs and what we strive to do.

What do you think makes someone a 'Good OT'? Let us know below!

What is PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance)❓

Knowledge around PDA is growing, however it is a widely misunderstood presentation. PDA is most commonly seen as a profile within Autism and is characterised by avoidance of demands, even if those demands are things that the individual wants to do. This is because demands cause an anxiety response simply because they are demands, not necessarily because of what the task is. Because of this, we need to adapt how we present demands, or remove them altogether. The “PANDA” approach (developed by the PDA society) is a great tool to begin exploring this. Working with PDAers is something that requires collaboration with the individual, their parents/guardians, and teachers.

You can speak with your OT if this is something you think you may need to explore.

💭 Mental Health Training

Over the January school holidays, Nicola completed a mental health professional development course which covered a range of topics including assessment and therapeutic interventions. Here’s what she had to say about the training:

“Mental health is a real passion area of mine so it was great to dive deeper into developing my skills in this area! I’m looking forward to applying new skills with the children and families I work with, and also working with the team to develop our approaches in this area!”

🎨 Paired Sessions

The Holidays can be a great time to do some paired sessions, to work on specific skills with a peer and OT support. This holidays, two of our friends got together to develop their social navigation through cooking and craft!
Check out their creation below!

This January, our OT Mel ran the Skills For School Group!

This group focuses on preparing young students for their first year at school. The kids were able to learn all about different skills including being a good listener, how to join into a game, how to ask for help as well as working on those fine motor skills of cutting and drawing! All the while enjoying meeting new people, working together and of course, movement breaks.

This group runs regularly, so if you have a child that will be starting prep in 2027, keep an eye out for it!

🎉🎉CONGRATULATIONS!🙌🙌

Congratulations to Ava, who after much dedication and hard work has completed her Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) Certification! This is a mammoth task involving many hours of learning, preparation and then presenting to colleagues and assessors! Well Done Ava on becoming a CO-OP certified therapist!

The CO-OP approach is a fantastic, evidence based approach that supports individuals to develop their motor skills through problem solving skills. From tying shoe laces, developing handwriting skills, to learning to dribble a basketball, CO-OP can be utilised to achieve your goals!

Contact us today if you are interested in CO-OP based therapy.
