What is PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance)❓
Knowledge around PDA is growing, however it is a widely misunderstood presentation. PDA is most commonly seen as a profile within Autism and is characterised by avoidance of demands, even if those demands are things that the individual wants to do. This is because demands cause an anxiety response simply because they are demands, not necessarily because of what the task is. Because of this, we need to adapt how we present demands, or remove them altogether. The “PANDA” approach (developed by the PDA society) is a great tool to begin exploring this. Working with PDAers is something that requires collaboration with the individual, their parents/guardians, and teachers.
You can speak with your OT if this is something you think you may need to explore.
