💡Mindful Listening 💭

Mindful listening is a technique where we make a conscious effort to be in the moment and listen to what the other person has to say. By being present with someone in the moment and letting go of the concerns of the future (being late, how this behaviour may impact them at school), and tuning into what they are saying with their words and their body, we can learn so much! When we are being mindful with kids, it can be easier to see what they are happy or angry about and understand the effect it is having on their emotions and their point of view, and can help us feel less stressed as well. It is a great tool to help with co-regulation, and supports us to support kids to find their calm and understand what they are trying to communicate.

Last term our OT's Jess and Mel completed the 'Occupational Performance Coaching' professional development course!

This month-long program involves learning and consolidating many skills, including strategies of how to work collaboratively with parents and families to ensure that the goals and strategies are not only beneficial, but also important to your lives. The program focuses on how to combine the knowledge of an OT with the expertise of parents. They look forward to bringing newly learnt skills to parent coaching sessions.

We especially love it when fine motor activities can be helpful around the home! Here are a few ideas for how you can get your kids using those fingers whilst helping out around the house!

🗣️ Name it to tame it! 💬

When working on emotional regulation skills, we spend a lot of time identifying our body signals to help us notice our emotions, and develop strategies we can use to regulate our emotions, a step that is sometimes overlooked is “name it to tame it”.

This is the brief moment we take to actually state our current emotion either in our heads or out loud. When we do this, we activate the thinking part of our brain and help to connect how we feel in our body, to what is going on in our heads. The action of labelling the feeling itself has a calming effect on our body. We love to teach children about this step to help them connect their brains to their bodies!
