In 2019, ABC’s Catalyst conducted a “mindfulness experiment” by inviting 14 Australians from all walks of life into an eight-week intensive mindfulness meditation program: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

Timothea Goddard, Director of Openground facilitated the course and the outcomes were researched by Assoc Professor Nicholas Van Dam, Senior Lecturer, University of Melbourne. (“What Mindfulness Isn’t”).

People in the group were dealing with the usual stress of life but also the poignant challenges of chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety and depression, injury, grief and loss and Multiple Sclerosis. The Catalyst program shows ordinary people in the throes of interest, confusion, irritation, pain, excitement, warmth and humour as they learn how to approach their own stress and distress using mindfulness meditation as their guide. Some amazing stories of transformation ensued. And the show also points out the complexities that scientists face when they are researching mindfulness.

Space is made when we grow our capacity to notice our thoughts versus trying to fight and resist them.

And from this space, we can better choose the thoughts that serve us best.

We can better discern between helpful and unhelpful thinking, like constant worrying and ruminating thoughts.

We can hold ourselves with tenderness, warmth and care while we walk through challenging times and crises.

This 1 hour session is introducing mindfulness and its benefits to people with chronic illness. Iris will discuss what is mindfulness (and what is it not), how mindfulness and meditation help when receiving a cancer diagnosis and living with cancer, and turning the mind into an ally.
