What a beautiful and moving Christmas video.

This is why we train for strength. Not for looks, but so that we can do the things in life that are important and bring us joy.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and your families!
Enjoy some movement this festive season!

This may be the best Christmas ad produced in 2020. Just fantastic. What do you think?

🏋🤸‍♀️🚴Our movement menu is designed to showcase a range of different opportunities to be active in our local area.

On the menu this month is the spectacular Endeavour Fern Gully Walk in Red Hill.
This 2km loop through an un-spoilt fern gully features numerous rare plant species as well as a variety of animals and birds, all easily viewable from the boardwalk trail, perfect for a family Christmas walk.

The entrance to this trail is located opposite the Red Hill recreation reserve on Arthurs Seat Road. Note that the trail itself is an easy walk, but access to the trail is via a relatively steep path from the car park.

🧪🎓✏️Our November Science Snapshot:

Endurance training improves immune system function in older adults

A study published last month examined the immune cells of older adults with a history of endurance exercise training (eg. running, cycling, swimming, rowing) and compared them against the immune cells of less active older adults.

The results suggested that not only is regular exercise beneficial for strength and fitness, but that it also enhances the effectiveness and adaptability of the immune system, and resulted in lower levels of inflammation.

Regular exercise training doesn't just train our heart and muscles, it trains our immune defenses!

You can find more information here:

An international team of researchers reports that the immune cells of older adults with a history of endurance training are more effective at combating inflammation. Regular physical activity not only benefits the muscles, lungs, and heart, but also enhances the body’s immune defenses. This concl

🚨 Inspiring Story Alert 🚨

This month's inspiring story is 39-year-old Aussie firefighter and ultra-marathon runner, Phil Gore.

Last month Phil won the Backyard Ultra World Championships, running 114 laps of the 6.7km course, for a total of 764km over almost 5 gruelling days.

The gruelling backyard ultra format requires competitors to complete a loop of the 6.7km course every hour, on the hour, until there is just one person left. The tight turnaround times between laps mean competitors have little time to sleep, eat or wash during the event.

You can read more about his amazing feat in an ABC news article here:

Ultra-athlete Phil Gore is Australia's newest world champion after five days of near-continuous running in Bell Buckle, Tennessee.

🧪🎓✏️Our November Science Snapshot:

Exercise is considered a first-line therapy for people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

A recent review of the research describes a broad range of mechanisms through which exercise can improve blood glucose management.

This review highlighted that both aerobic and resistance exercise improve glycaemic control (but through different mechanisms), and that the timing of exercise (morning vs. afternoon, pre- vs post-meal) can influence the effects of exercise on blood sugar levels.
