On the menu this month is the Peninsula Link Trail!

🧪🎓✏️Our September Science Snapshot:

Do Pain Rehabilitation Exercises Need To Be Painful?

For people with persistent / chronic pain, exercise is consistently recommended as a cornerstone of treatment, not only for pain itself but to maintain or regain physical function that has been lost. For clinicians and patients, a common concern during rehab is whether or not an exercise needs to be painful or pain free to be effective.

An analysis of all published research found that in the short term, painful exercise resulted in greater benefits than pain-free exercise, although in the medium to long term, both were beneficial but there was no difference between the two.

This means when completing exercise to help recover from pain, pain during exercise need not be a cause for alarm, but it doesn’t need to be a goal either!

🚨 Inspiring Story Alert 🚨

This month’s inspiring story is our very own Senior Exercise Physiologist Jase!

In the last week of August, he and 24 other health professionals and researchers, rode more than 700km around the Sunshine Coast in QLD as part of the Pain Revolution Rural Outreach tour.

With less-than-ideal preparation, Jase averaged 100km per day on the bike, with the longest day being nearly 150km and lots of steep climbs.

Jase and the Pain Revolution team provided free education sessions to members of the public at each of the towns they visited, covering best-evidence understanding of chronic pain, and how to find the right healthcare professionals to help.

🚨 Inspiring Story Alert 🚨

This month’s inspiring story is our very own Group member Julia!

Julia started regular Strength & Conditioning groups at Your Move Health in early 2023 at 71 years of age, with the goal of improving her strength, stamina and balance, having previously had a back fusion and both knees replaced.

At first, standing up and down multiple times from a chair without using her hands was a challenge. However, after consistently training twice per week over the last 2 years, Julia is able to complete 35 consecutive chair stands in a minute, and also deadlift a whopping 50kg from the floor!

Julia is a perfect example that it’s never too late to start strength training!

Day 8 and the final day of Jase’s Pain Revolution tour through the Sunshine Coast is now complete!!

This was a tough one, with a steep climb on tired legs!
Some stunning scenery, awesome views from the top, and an enjoyable descent, this was a fantastic ride to finish the week.

It has been such a privilege to ride with a group of scientists, healthcare professionals and all-round good humans who are passionate about helping Aussies living with chronic pain.

Thank you also to everyone who supported Jase’s fundraising efforts - the target was exceeded, which means more scholarships for rural and regional clinicians to learn about pain science!

Day 5 of Jase’s Pain Revolution ride complete, a shorter but still lumpy 75km ride from Maleny down to Noosa.

Legs and saddle were both feeling a little tender today after a few long days, so the slightly shorter day was welcome!

A fantastic community education event in Noosa also, well attended and with lots of conversation!

Day 4 of Jase’s Pain Revolution ride done, 99km from Gympie to Maleny.

Some solid climbing today, more than 1600m of elevation, most of it in the last 25km.

Also managed 3 punctures, a tyre change, and even a hit of tennis at lunch!!

It’s not too late to chip in to Jase’s fundraising efforts, with funds providing scholarships for local health professionals to upskill with a graduate diploma in Pain Science.
