It's National Diabetes Week where we create awareness about Diabetes and how to effectively manage it.

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a serious and chronic condition where there is too much glucose in the blood. The body cannot make insulin (or enough insulin) and over time the high glucose levels can damage blood vessels and nerves, resulting in long term health complications.

What are the different types of Diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes: occurs in both children and adults and is an autoimmune disease. This type of diabetes has a strong genetic link and cannot be prevented.
Type 2 diabetes: occurs over a long period of time and can have genetic links. It is often associated with modifiable lifestyle risk factors and can often be reversible.
Gestational diabetes: usually occurs in pregnancy and can cause complications. It often resolves after childbirth.

What are the common symptoms of diabetes?
- Feeling more thirsty than usual.
- Urinating more frequently.
- Losing weight without trying.
- Feeling tired and weak.
- Feeling irritable or having other mood changes.
- Having blurred vision.
- Having slow-healing sores.
- The presence of ketones in the urine.

What should I do if I think I have diabetes?
Make an appointment with your GP who can run further tests to diagnose your symptoms. If you have diabetes it's important to see your GP regularly to ensure you are monitoring your blood sugar levels regularly and have access to medication if needed. Your GP can also provide support in developing a care team to further support your needs such as a dietician, diabetes educator, physiotherapist and other allied health professionals.

As we move deeper into the winter months, the days are shorter, the temperatures drop and there is a greater tendency to succumb to viruses. Here are our top tips to staying healthy through winter:

1. Practice good hand hygiene 🙌
Many common infectious diseases are spread by germs on our hands. Reduce your risk of getting sick or passing on infections by washing your hands regularly.

3. Eat fresh, seasonal fruit & veggies 🍎
Seasonal fruit and veggies have lots of nutrients that our body can easily absorb. This helps keep your immune system strong and able to fight any illnesses that you may be exposed to.

4. Stay hydrated 💧
While we tend to drink less in winter, it's important to stay hydrated and maintain your fluid intake. This helps to flush any toxins out of your system to ensure your immune system is working at its best.

5. Keep active during winter 🚶‍♀️
It's easy to curl up and stay indoors, however the best way to keep your body and mind working at its best is to include regular exercise. You'll soon warm up once you get moving, so keep up a regular exercise regime.

6. Get a good night's rest 😴
Quality sleep is essential for your mind and body to work at its best. While you are sleeping your body does lots of great work including keeping your heart healthy, regulates blood sugar and restores your immune system.

7. Ensure you are up to date with vaccines & immunisations ✔
Being up to date with your vaccines and immunisations can decrease your chances of getting illnesses and also reduce the severity of symptoms if you do.

Today is National Blood Donor Day. Did you know that one blood donation can save up to three lives? Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has issued an immediate call for donors as their reserves of most blood types drop to critical levels.* If you've been considering donating blood, now is the time to do it.

What is a blood donation?
Blood that's taken straight from a donor. After it's donated, it is separated blood into red blood cells, plasma and platelets in the lab.

How long do red blood cells last?
Red blood cells only last 42 days from when they’re donated. Australia needs over 1.7 million donations every year to meet demand: that's three every minute.

Who can give blood?
If you are aged 18-75 years old, healthy and weigh over 50 kg then you may be eligible. You can take the blood donor eligibility quiz here: https://www.lifeblood.com.au/blood/eligibility/quiz

Where can I donate blood?
There are lots of blood donor centres around Melbourne. Make a difference and find your closest location here: https://my.donateblood.com.au/app/appointments/location

As we move further into Autumn and the cooler months of the year, take some time to consider how you can boost your immunity and keep yourself as healthy as possible.

Our top 6 autumn health tips include:

1. Eat a healthy balanced diet 🍎
Aim for whole plant foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes are rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Also include healthy fats such as olive oil and salmon to boost your body’s immune response.

2. Move your body 🚶‍♀️🚶
Create a regular exercise routine to help your body reduce inflammation and regenerate immune cells. Consider walking, cycling, jogging or swimming for 30 minutes each day.

3. Stay hydrated 💧
When your body is dehydrated it can cause headaches and hinder your physical performance, focus, mood, digestion, and heart and kidney function which can increase your susceptibility to illness.

4. Manage your stress levels 😖
Studies have proven that long term stress promotes inflammation and an imbalance of immune cell function. Relieving stress and anxiety is key to good immune health - try exercising, meditation, journaling, yoga or other mindful activities.

5. Get a good night's sleep 😴
Adults should aim to get 7 or more hours of sleep each night, teens need 8–10 hours and younger children and infants up to 14 hours.

6. Ensure you're up to date with immunisations and vaccinations ➕
This helps to protect yourself and your loved ones from illnesses.

April is Parkinson's Awareness Month where we bring awareness to Parkinson's disease, a progressive, degenerative neurological condition that affects a person’s control of their body movements.

When a person has Parkinson’s Disease they are likely to experience a number of symptoms. Some of the more common symptoms include:
- Resting tremor (shaking in a body part when it is at rest)
- Rigidity (muscle stiffness)
- Bradykinesia (slowness of movement)
- Freezing (experiencing a sudden inability to move)
- Difficulty with multitasking
- Loss of volume in speech
- Stooped posture
- Shuffling gait
- Micrographia (small handwriting)
- Apathy
- Fatigue
- Sleep disturbance
- Loss of sense of smell
- Depression
- Blood pressure fluctuation
- Constipation

Most people with Parkinson’s first develop symptoms in their 60s, however a small percentage have early onset Parkinson's disease. Symptoms are brought on by the progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the middle area of the brain. This causes a lack of dopamine, a chemical messenger (neurotransmitter). There are a range of treatments and support available that can allow a person with Parkinson’s to lead a fulfilling and productive life.

If you notice any of the above symptoms, we encourage you to speak to your GP. To book an appointment visit https://skrmedicalcentre.com.au/
