We recently welcomed the Victorian Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas MP, Member for Cranbourne Pauline Richards MP and Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale MP to Cranbourne Community Hospital, to officially open our newest facility.

The Cranbourne Community Hospital will provide local patients with the care they need, much closer to home and across a range of services.

The Minister met with one of the community hospital’s first patients, Noelene, a Cranbourne local who has been undergoing dialysis with Monash Health.

‘I’ve been on dialysis for 2 years now,’ Noelene said.

‘When I used to go to Clayton [for treatment], my daughters used to get up and drive me and one used to come and pick me up which…was really hard.’

Noelene received treatment at Casey Hospital as well.

‘Casey was pretty good, it was only 20 minutes’ drive but this is five minutes, which means I don’t have to get up so early and don’t have to go in the traffic as much. It’s really handy.’

Services at Cranbourne Community Hospital will open in a phased approach. Dialysis, adult mental health, day surgery, pathology and pharmacy are operational now.

The Cranbourne Community Hospital was delivered in collaboration with the Victorian Health Building Authority.

Monash Health is thrilled to announce that we have been appointed as the host and manager of the inaugural Victorian Centre for Advancement in Allied Health! 🎉

This incredible achievement follows a competitive tender process and marks a new chapter in the development of Victoria’s allied health workforce. The centre will be a central hub, collaborating with health services, academic institutions, and unions to support and grow our allied health workforce.

Our Chief Allied Health Officer, Danielle Ryan, shared her pride in our team and the work we do:

‘This is a “first of its kind” opportunity to bring together allied health workforce initiatives across Victoria and work strategically with allied health therapists and scientists, healthcare leaders and academic and industrial partners. I'm incredibly proud of our allied health community in Victoria and I am very excited about the potential of this new opportunity.’

Backed by $3.4 million in government funding over the first three years, the centre will focus on:

✅Improving the profile and visibility of the allied health workforce
✅Supporting statewide workforce planning
✅Improving allied health professional practice, service design, and system policy
✅Encouraging the uptake of evidence-based clinical methods
✅Helping allied health professionals develop and provide leadership across the sector.

We have already begun work to set up the new centre, including planning to recruit staff, designing operational functions, and developing the strategic workplan for the coming year.

In Victoria, allied health incorporates 27 professions, including occupational therapy, speech pathology, radiography, and physiotherapy, with more than 42,500 practitioners.

Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas congratulated us on our successful tender bid and expressed her enthusiasm for the centre's establishment:

‘Allied health workers do incredibly important work – that’s why the new centre at Monash Health will be key to ensuring that more than 42,000 practitioners get the support they need. We will always back our allied health workforce so they can continue delivering world-class care to Victorians across the state.’

Monash Health is committed to leading the way in allied health workforce development and looks forward to the positive impact this centre will have on the healthcare sector in Victoria.

‘Pacers gonna pace.’

Do you love Taylor Swift and heart health? Well, this is the interview for you!

Dr Hui-Chen Han, cardiologist, researcher and Swiftie at the Victorian Heart Hospital and Monash Victorian Heart Institute, joined the Get Cereal podcast to chat heartbeats and pacemakers.

How does a pacemaker know when to kick in?

How has heart-tech evolved over the years?

Is there potential for a pacemaker x Spotify collaboration that ensures the heart beats to a Taylor Swift song?

This podcast answers all these great questions! Check it out via the link in our comments.

Did you know that every 11 minutes, someone suffers from a stroke in Australia? ⏱️

The good news is that 80% of strokes are preventable by adopting healthy habits.

Last week, the Monash Health Foundation hosted its fourth event in our Business Breakfast Series – connecting with business leaders from across Victoria to explore ‘The Business of Recovery – Stroke’s Impact on the Workplace’.

We were joined by our MC, Bill Haggerty, special guests and experts Professor Henry Ma, Director of Neuroscience at Monash Health, Professor Dominique Cadilhac, senior stroke researcher at Monash University, and three-time stroke survivor Bill Gasiamis, to keep informed about stroke prevention, early response, and workplace support and recovery.

A special thank you to our major sponsor, EML, for supporting this important event 💙

This week, we celebrated over 1,800 employees and volunteers reaching milestone lengths of service at Monash Health.

Hundreds of people marking 10, 20, 30 or even 50 years with us attended our annual Length of Service Awards, held at Southern Golf Club.

One of the highlights of the day was a heartwarming video in which award recipients shared reflections and stories from their years at Monash Health.

We were moved to hear about their personal and family connections to Monash Health, their values, commitment, and passion for our patients and community.

Not all recipients could make the day but they were very much in our thoughts. We recognise and appreciate their dedication and impactful contribution.

To all our Length of Service Award recipients, thank you for everything you do.

One minute you're mowing the lawn, the next you're being told you need open-heart surgery.

Being active and strong has been a constant in Alex's life. At 6 foot 10, he’s built for it. So, imagine how he felt when he couldn't lift a 1 kg weight.

It was an ordinary day when Alex's life took an unexpected turn.

While mowing the lawn, Alex found himself unable to catch his breath. 'I went down on one knee and thought, "I can't breathe."'

He drove himself to the Victorian Heart Hospital, where tests revealed concerns with Alex's heart, and in March this year, Alex underwent open-heart surgery to repair his mitral valve, which separates the two chambers of the left side of the heart.

The surgery was difficult, hampered by complications from other issues with his heart.

'I went into a coma for a week, and it was pretty scary.'

Despite struggling through the surgery, he came out the other side, and about six weeks post-surgery, Alex commenced cardiac rehabilitation.

At the Victorian Heart Hospital, the Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation team plays a crucial role in helping patients make long-term lifestyle changes. The program is personalised to each patient’s needs and includes a combination of exercise, education, and support led by a team of more than 20 health professionals.

‘I cried in my first rehab session because I couldn’t lift 1kg dumbbells. I used to be a bodybuilder, and I felt so frail.’

However, with determination and support from the rehab team, Alex progressed to 8kg dumbbells and has returned to mountain biking.

While there is still a road to travel for Alex, he continues with humility and an ambition to help others through their own journeys.

Thank you for sharing your inspirational journey, Alex 💙

At just 22 weeks, a human baby weighs less than a can of soft drink.

A generation ago, these infants would not have been resuscitated.

Today, thanks to major advances in neonatal care, they’re being given a chance at life.

But survival is only part of the story.

Celebrating 60 years of impact, Monash University Department of Paediatrics together with Monash Health, are at the forefront of neonatal research and have been pushing the boundaries of what's possible.

From pioneering neuroprotection strategies to groundbreaking clinical trials, our dedicated teams are making strides in improving long-term outcomes for pre-term babies.

Highlights:

✅ Leading trials to protect pre-term infants from brain injury and improve neurodevelopmental outcomes.

✅ Establishing Australia-first clinic for early detection of cerebral palsy.

✅ Preserving oxygenation and circulation in pre-term babies.

✅ Studies on pre-birth growth restriction on the heart and brain.

✅ Using a baby’s own cord blood cells as a treatment in extremely pre-term infants.

Through a robust alliance between Monash Health, Monash University and the Hudson Institute of Medical Research via the Monash Health Translation Precinct, world-leading research has been successfully translated into better patient outcomes — a testament to the impact of collaboration in driving healthcare innovation.

Join us in congratulating Monash University’s Department of Paediatrics’ 60 years of impact.

It’s more than morning sickness — hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a debilitating pregnancy condition that can lead to hospitalisation, emotional distress, and even decisions to avoid future pregnancies.

The Princess of Wales famously had the condition while pregnant with all 3 of her children.

Although there are drugs to minimise nausea and vomiting, these can be variable in effectiveness. Unfortunately, there are currently no therapies that target the underlying root cause of HG during pregnancy.

Monash Health is proud to be part of a world-first trial exploring a new treatment that could offer real relief to pregnant women with this serious condition.

‘There is a desperate need for new HG treatments. We are hopeful that by participating in this world-first study we may help discover if this new drug can afford some benefit - not just to the current trial participants, but to all pregnant people with the most severe forms of nausea and vomiting that current treatments cannot mitigate,’ said Principal Investigator, Professor Kirsten Palmer.

We are among 11 sites throughout Australia, the UK and the Philippines enroling for this first-in-pregnancy trial. The drug has already been tested in healthy patients and those undergoing chemotherapy to evaluate the safety and efficacy.

If you have been diagnosed with this condition, check with your obstetrician to see if you are a suitable candidate for this trial.

Our emergency department at Monash Medical Centre is currently experiencing extreme demand.

Non-life-threatening presentations will likely experience longer wait times as a result.

If you need urgent care, but it's non-life-threatening, please consider:

💻 Video call 24/7 Virtual Emergency Care

☎️ Telephone 24/7 Nurse-on-Call on 1300 60 60 24

👉 An Urgent Care Centre

👩‍⚕️ Local doctor or GP

Please see the link in our comments for all the information you need.

We want you to be seen as quickly as possible, so if you need care but it is not an emergency, please consider these alternative pathways to care.

In a life-threatening medical emergency, please call Triple Zero (000) or attend the emergency department.

Wait times at our emergency departments vary, as patients are seen in order of clinical urgency. The most sick or injured are always cared for first.

When a patient arrives at one of our emergency departments, they are assessed or 'triaged' for urgency and categorised on a scale from 1 to 5. Category 1 patients require immediate life-saving treatment, whereas Category 5 patients need non-urgent care.

Knowing his son, Esnaf, is comfortable and cared for by familiar faces means the world to his father, Eddie.

Esnaf moved into the Boollam Boollam Aged Care Centre when it officially opened in September.

‘Ten out of 10! Eleven out of 10! I've seen it but I don't believe it,’ marvelled Eddie on move-in day.

Esnaf was a resident at Monash Health’s Yarraman Nursing Home for 6 years before he moved with all his carers to the new centre in Heatherton.

‘All the staff, they know Esnaf and they know his needs, they know what he's like.’

The centre is close to Eddie’s home, making regular visits to see his son easy.

Eddie’s cousin has also moved to the centre, keeping the family connected.

‘I've got no word for it. The place is unbelievable,’ said Eddie.
