The ANMF is the largest union in the country with over 302,000 nurses, midwives and carers joining strongly together since 1924. We are proud of the work that our members do, in every hospital, nursing home, GP clinic, community health practice, from rural and remote Australia to large hospitals in big cities. As a national body, the Federal Office would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners

and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging across Australia, with particular acknowledgement to the Greater Kulin Nation, the Traditional Owners of the lands where the Melbourne Office is located and the Ngunnawal people, the Traditional Owners where the Canberra office is located. We remain committed to healing work through Voice, Treaty, Truth and our Reconciliation Action Plan. https://www.anmf.org.au/about/reconciliation-action-plan

As nurses, midwives and direct care workers, we are all in on building safe practices, respectful relationships and improving health outcomes.

Cultural connection and cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are vital to wellbeing and health equity.

Building foundational cultural safety knowledge enables safe service to be defined by those who receive the service and provides care that is holistic, free of bias and racism, challenges beliefs based on assumptions, and is delivered respectfully.

Find Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness training resources here for nurses, midwives and direct-care workers here https://bit.ly/4vkBlIE and check in with your ANMF state or territory branch for more resources.

The human right to healthcare is at the heart of the person-centred, safe and quality care that Australian nurses, midwives and direct-care workers deliver every day and night.

To back that up, it's important for Australia to have its own National Human Rights Act as a legal framework.

This week, Independent MPs have pushed for a Human Rights Act in Federal Parliament.

Introducing this private members' Bill to the House of Representatives was Andrew Wilkie MP - Independent Member for Clark and seconded by Helen Haines MP.

Encompassing adequate income, housing, health care, education, and a healthy environment, an Australian Human Rights Act would articulate what fundamental human rights are available to people, centre people in government decision-making, and ensure respect and dignity for all.

More than 170 organisations are backing the call for a federal Act.

Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week (27 May–3 June). The 2026 theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is a collective responsibility — one that calls for courage, honesty and everyday action. We acknowledge the leadership and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who have carried this work for far too long. The ANMF is committed to walking this path together. Reconciliation will not happen without all of us. https://bit.ly/4u3xWgj

On today's National Sorry Day, we honour the strength, truth and lived experiences of Stolen Generations survivors and their families.
We stand with Reconciliation Australia and The Healing Foundation in amplifying this year's call: From Sorry to Action and acting on the Bringing Them Home report.
Saying sorry matters. It acknowledges truth and signals compassion.
But sorry without action is not enough.
