Ever wondered how long you should be resting between sets?

A study published in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research investigated how rest duration affects hypertrophy (aka muscle growth). They compared lifters resting 1 min vs 3 mins between sets… & the results were wild!

After 8 weeks, the 3-minute rest crew built up to 93% more muscle growth in key muscles like the quads & triceps 🤯 Longer rest lets you lift heavier for more reps across sets, which = more volume & better gains.

Two legends, two anniversaries, one very proud team! 🥳

First up, our Pilates queen & physio powerhouse Emma! She’s been part of our crew for FOUR amazing years, leading with that infectious laughter, supportive energy & helping countless clients move, feel & live better. Beyond the treatment room, Emma is also our Head of Culture & Wellness - making sure Upwell is always a place filled with connection, care & good vibes!

Jake, one of our Exercise Physiologists, is a gentle soul who’s just as caring as he is motivating. We can’t believe it’s only been 2 years since he started here - we can’t imagine Upwell without him! His sessions are filled with energy, laughter, expertise & he’s loved by his longterm clients for knowing when to encourage, when to challenge & when to drop the perfect joke!

Training with your cycle isn’t about restriction - it’s about OPTIMISATION! 😌

Here are our running-loving podiatrist Mia’s tips on how to sync your training with your menstrual cycle ⬇️

🔹 Menstrual phase (days 1–5): Low estrogen & progesterone = lower energy, cramps & mood shifts. Light movement (walking, yoga, Pilates) helps circulation & eases pain. Gentle is key.

🔹 Follicular phase (up to day 13): Rising estrogen & testosterone boost recovery & neuromuscular efficiency. This is your window for strength PBs, high-intensity sessions & new skills. Injury risk is lower here.

🔹 Ovulation (around day 14): Peak hormones = peak performance — but also increased ligament laxity. This means higher risk of ACL & ankle sprains. Focus on stability, glute/hamstring activation & controlled technique while pushing your limits.

🔹 Luteal phase (days 15–28): Progesterone climbs, estrogen dips = PMS, fatigue & soreness. Shift to steady-state cardio, moderate strength, yoga & recovery-focused training. Listen to your body & prioritise sleep, nutrition & hydration.
