"How will I know when I'm getting stronger/fitter?"

As humans we are very much programmed to chase:

The quick fix
The drastic Before and After
The most accepted body shape
The same or better result than others we admire

What we often forget is that another side of being human is being individual and fundamentally unreplicable. And we LOVE that!

At Arete Effect we don't do Before and After comparisons, believing that this supports the 'quick fix' mentality in place of sustainable health improvements for better living. Our desire for you is to experience full health benefits over and above changes in appearance, as you learn to honour your body and mind with trust and respect both in and out of the studio.

1. Do one thing just for joy – No purpose, no productivity. Just joy. How often do we as adults forgo the fun because we can't see the value in it? The fun IS the value - it's time to permit your brain and heart some space.

2. Go barefoot on grass – Grounding works. Plus, it feels nice. There is actual science behind this.....look out for our post coming soon.

3. Set a 10-minute ‘me time’ timer – Pick anything you love. The world will wait. I love this one as I don't have to worry about taking too much time so I can really relax in the moment without guilt creeping in.

No Pain No Gain?

There is no current evidence that training to failure (where you cannot complete your rep due to muscle fatigue) repeatedly brings better results.
This style of training will more likely leave you unable to function without pain.

Soreness ≠ success.

Muscle soreness is a sign of broken and repairing muscles, which we aim for with control during muscle growth (hypertrophy) phases.

Ongoing muscle pain is a good indicator of poor recovery and/or over training which will in turn lead to less productive sessions overall. And no, an ice bath will not fix the problem.

What matters more?

✅ Movement quality
✅ Progress over time
✅ Feeling strong and capable in daily life

Let go of “no pain, no gain.” That’s not our style.
