25/01/2025
As January 26 approaches, UMMSS acknowledges this day as one of mourning and reflection, honouring First Nations peoples ongoing strength and resilience.
January 26 marks the beginning of colonisation in Australia. While some have celebrated this date, for First Nations peoples, it has always been a day of mourning. In 1938, 150 years after the arrival of the First Fleet, First Nations leaders gathered in protest, declaring it a Day of Mourning. This pivotal event initiated Invasion Day and Survival Day rallies, forming one of the world’s earliest major civil rights movements.
UMMSS recognises the true history of so-called Australia. It was only in 1994 that the government formally declared January 26 a national public holiday as "Australia Day." Opposed to common misconceptions, this date does not mark Captain Cook planting a flag—it commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet, marking the onset of colonisation on this continent. For First Nations peoples, January 26 stands as a painful reminder of invasion, destruction, dispossession, genocide, and the ongoing impacts of colonisation on sacred land, culture, language, and lives.
This is a particularly difficult day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, made even more challenging in the wake of the 2023 referendum results. We encourage First Nations communities to look after one another, stand together, and honour the strength and resilience that continues to endure. Whatever January 26 represents to you—whether Invasion Day, Survival Day or just another day—caring for each other remains essential.
For the wider community, this day provides an opportunity for reflection, education, and action. We encourage everyone to engage in open and honest conversations, commit to understanding and acknowledging our shared history, stand in solidarity with First Nations peoples, and advocate for truth-telling.
UMMSS will be attending the Invasion Day Rally on January 26 in Naarm, come and march with us! 🖤💛❤️ ✊🏾
